Henderson Alvarez (Shoulder) To Begin Rehab Assignment

Henderson Alvarez will begin a minor league rehab assignment with High-A Jupiter, according to the Miami Herald.

The Miami Marlins pitcher was cleared on Thursday after a shoulder injury knocked him out of action since May 22.

Alvarez, 25, was off to a bad start in 2015 after the All-Star season he had a year ago. In 2014, the right-hander had a 12-7 record with a 2.65 ERA. In only four games pitched in 2015, Alvarez was 0-4 with a 6.45 ERA. A healthy shoulder could bring about the Alvarez from 2014.

He won’t likely be back with the Marlins until late July, after first completing a few starts with the rehab assignment. Miami has a 38-51 record going into the All-Star break and are second to the last in the NL East, so the Marlins could take their time bringing back Alvarez.

There’s also a potential market for Alvarez’s services. He won’t be back before the trade deadline, but teams in the race for the postseason could make offers to complete their starting rotations.
