They say timing is everything.
It's also the key to comedy.
So, while some of you may find it funny that we're bothering to do a top 10 two hours before the only rankings that matter--those of the BCS Selection Committee--are released, we don't care. Because we have our own thoughts as to the top teams--and players--in college football's regular season.
Here's our Top 10 as of December 3, 2017--the final week of the season (with won-loss records in parentheses). Until January...
NCAA College Football (CFB) Rankings
1. Oklahoma, (12-1)
The Sooners have the best player in college football this season in QB Baker Mayfield (15-23, 243 yards, 4 TDs), who had his usual stellar performance in the Big 12 Championship Game. And they still have the best signature road win of every team in the top four (vs. Ohio State earlier in the season). So they're our No. 1. For what it's worth.
2. Clemson, (12-1)
The BCS Selection Committee will rank the Tigers No. 1, and we don't necessarily have a problem with that. We just just think the Big 12 is a stronger conference top to bottom than the ACC. Dabo Swinney's team beat the second-best squad in the ACC--Miami--in the title game, and made it look easy. Defensive lineman Christian Wilkins (7 tackles, 2 passes defended) was a beast.
3. Georgia, (12-1)
About the only thing we can hang our hats on this season is that we never thought much of Auburn--relatively speaking. They're a top team, for sure, and tough to beat at home, as we told Georgia and Alabama just the other day, but get them on the road or on a "neutral" site... Anyway, with RB Sony Michel dinged up, freshman D'Andre Swift (7 carries, 88 yards, 1 TD) emerged for Georgia against Auburn in the SEC title game, and thus the Dawgs are in in our books, too.
4. Alabama, (11-1)
Respect conference championship games? Why should we if the BCS Selection Committee doesn't (see: Penn State)? So there. Alabama had a bad day at Auburn. We still see them as the best team in the country, frankly, and feel they deserve a shot to prove it.
5. Wisconsin, (12-1)
We had hoped RB Jonathan Taylor (15 carries, 41 yards) and the Badgers would make us look like geniuses for ranking them No. 1 last week by beating Ohio State in the Big 10 Championship Game. They came close, but... We agree with the BCS folks that Wisconsin's low strength-of-schedule keeps them out of the top four--but for us, only just.
6. Auburn, (10-3)
The Tigers nearly created quite a mess for the BCS. But RB Kerryon Johnson (13 carries, 44 yards) got hurt against Georgia in the SEC title game and the rest, as they say, was history.
7. USC, (11-2)
Do the Trojans deserve a shot at the top four? No. Does QB Sam Darnold deserve a spotlight on the game's biggest stage? Yep. Darnold completed 17 of 24 passes for 325 yards and 2 TDs in the Pac-12 Championship Game--so he made a sound even if no one was there to hear it.
8. Ohio State, (10-2)
We wanted to have a little fun and rank Penn State here, as a small measure of revenge. But we're not that petty. And the Buckeyes proved the belong by beating Wisconsin in the Big 10 title game. Freshman RB J.K. Dobbins (17 carries, 174 yards) is no joke.
9. TCU, (10-3)
Defense wins championships? Not in the Big 12. QB Kenny Hill (27-37, 234 yards 2 TDs, 1 INT) showed us something against Oklahoma--just not enough.
10. Miami, (10-2)
Turnover Chain? Try ball and chain. It looked like the Canes were wearing them against Clemson in the ACC Championship Game. The swagger may be back, but this isn't your father's U. Not yet anyway.
