Beware the Ides of March...
Or, if you're Gonzaga, late-February.
The bloom officially fell off the 'Zags rose, courtesy of BYU. So who's left?
Here are our CBB rankings for the week of February 27th (won-loss records in parentheses).
NCAA College Basketball (CBB) Rankings
1. Kansas, (26-3)
As you know, we've always liked the Jayhawks. And what's not to like? Frank Mason III (20.2 PPG) continues to play at a high level.
2. UCLA, (26-3)
We're not surprised that the Bruins have made a run as the season winds down, with their big win over Arizona making it seven in a row for Steve Alford's team. Thomas Welsh (10.6 PPG, 8.5 RPG) isn't one of the stars in Westwood, but he's shaping into a nice complementary player in the pivot.
3. Villanova, (27-3)
A loss at home to Butler knocks 'Nova out of the top spot this week. But will the Wildcats' lack of depth knock them back in the postseason? Coach Jay Wright has been going seven deep as the season winds down.
4. Gonzaga, (29-1)
Losing in your regular season finale is a buzzkill, but it shouldn't cost the 'Zags a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. We think. Senior center Przemek Karnowski is making more than 60% of his shots this season.
5. Oregon, (26-4)
The Ducks are another Pac-12 team peaking at the right time. Dillon Brooks has been hot of late (15.6 PPG for the season), which is also a good sign.
6. Kentucky, (24-5)
Calipari's men are arguably still boys, but freshman Malik Monk (21.2 PPG) continues to score against top competition.
7. Arizona, (26-4)
The Wildcats may have lost to UCLA, but we still like them to make waves in the Big Dance. Five guys are averaging in double figures in scoring for coach Sean Miller's team.
8. North Carolina, (25-5)
The Tar Heels are tops in the ACC right now, but this isn't your father's ACC. Then again, it's not your father's Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference either (Google it). If nothing else, the Tar Heels are deep, with Roy Williams rotating nine guys.
9. West Virginia, (23-6)
Don't look now, but the Mountaineers have won three in a row. And, as we say whenever we talk about them, defense wins... We know. Enough already.
10. SMU (24-4)
SMU?! This isn't college football in the 1980s! But the Mustangs are good. And Semi Ojeleye (18.2 PPG, 6.7 RPG) is like a semi truck.
