We waited too long to jump on the Villanova bandwagon last season, and never heard the end of it.
If nothing else, we learn from our mistakes. The Wildcats are hot, and there's no reason to not give them their due.
How do the rest of the teams and players stack up? Here are our CBB rankings for the week of December 5th (won-loss records in parentheses).
NCAA College Basketball (CBB) Rankings
1. Villanova, (8-0)
We said last week that if 'Nova kept winning we'd move them up, and the Wildcats have done just that, putting a whupping on Philly rival St. Joe's. Guard Kris Jenkins (14.1 PPG) is still a great option as a secondary scorer.
2. Duke, (8-1)
Guard Luke Kennard may be the hottest player in the country right now. He's upped his scoring to 19.4 PPG so far this season, up from 11.8 last year. It will be interesting to see if Coach K's team will hold up through the meat of the ACC schedule.
3. Kentucky, (7-1)
We still like the 'Cats, despite their home loss on Saturday to UCLA. UCLA is good (see below), but John Calipari's team will need to bounce back to stay at the top.
4. North Carolina, (7-1)
An up and down week for the Tar Heels that saw them lose on the road at Indiana before coming back home to beat up on Radford. Sophomore guard Kenny Williams had a breakout game in that latter contest, which could be a good sign for UNC.
5. Kansas, (7-1)
Frank Mason III (20 PPG) keeps scoring and KU keeps winning. Devonte' Graham (13.1 PPG) is a nice player, too.
6. Creighton, (8-0)
The Bluejays continue to impress. And boy can guard Khyri Thomas (13.8 PPG, 60% FG%) shoot.
7. Gonzaga, (6-0)
Big win for the 'Zags in LA, and a big game by big man Przemek Karnowski (11.8 PPG, 5.8 RPG). At 7-1, he can be a dominant force inside.
8. UCLA, 9-0
We like the Bruins. We do. And we know: They beat Kentucky in Lexington. And we promise we'll show them some love if they keep this up. All five starters have the potential to play at the next level.
9. Baylor, (8-0)
We had to get Baylor in. We just had to. Not because the Big 12 is under-represented. We promise. We really like Bears point guard Manu Lecomte (13.9 PPG, 5.3 APG).
10. St. Mary's, (6-0)
Speaking of point guards--and, while we're at it, mid-majors--the Gaels get in our rankings, at least for now, thanks to one of the best pass-first, shoot later guards in the game Joe Rahon (7.3 PPG, 6.2 APG).
