UCL DFS Lineup Picks - Overview
Finland vs Russia
Finland is coming off a surprise win over Denmark in their first game of the tournament. The game was originally suspended after Christian Eriksen collapsed on the field mid-game but resumed play later in the day. Understandably, the Danish could not rally for a win after witnessing their teammate's significant health scare on the pitch. They have put themselves in a good position, and now they take on a Russia (-150) side coming off a 3-0 defeat to Belgium. If Russia have any hope of making it out of the group, they need a big result here. Russia will likely control the majority of this game, but Finland will not make it easy with their newfound confidence. The goal total over/under is the lowest on the slate at 2, 2.5 with the over at +105.
Turkey vs Wales
Turkey (+145) got dominated by Italy 3-0 in their first game, but they'll be small favorites against Wales on Wednesday. Wales pulled out a nice 1-1 draw against Switzerland in their first game. Both teams will be desperate for a good result in this game to put themselves in position to qualify for the Round of 16. I mentioned liking Turkey's attacking group for DFS purposes the last time they were on a slate, but I was waiting for a better matchup like this to target them. Stay tuned for how I approach them later in the breakdown. The goal total over/under is 2, 2.5 with both the over and the under at -110.
Switzerland vs Italy
Italy (-155) were favorites to win the group and they confirmed that in their opening match 3-0 win over Turkey. They were dominant in all aspects of the game and looked dangerous going forward in this competition. The Swiss drew 1-1 with Wales in their first game which they will consider disappointing after leading 1-0. They will try to give Italy a run for their money here, but if Italy play well again, it won't be much of a competition. The goal total over/under is 2, 2.5 with the over slightly more likely.
FanDuel DFS Forwards / Midfielders
Italy will be the chalk team as far as attackers go on this slate on the back of their three goals last game. While I do like some Italian attackers, I do not think that we need to go overboard with them considering their style of play, price, and other available attackers on the slate.
I have no issue going right back to either Ciro Immobile ($23) or Lorenzo Insigne ($22). It was clear that these two were the main forces in the Italian attack. Immobile and Insigne were both very productive with shots and chances created and both scored against Turkey. They both lead the team in anytime scoring odds again at +160 and +240, respectively. They're both top-tier plays on this slate, but there is no need to get both in the same lineup.
Finland's defense was able to hold Denmark scoreless on Saturday, however, that's not going to be a common theme for them in this tournament. They allowed 22 shots total and gave up 70% of the possession. Russia - who will be hungry to avenge their 3-0 loss - should come out and dominate in the same way the Danish did and score some goals on top of that. Artem Dzyuba ($20) has the best anytime scoring odds on the slate at +105 and will likely come at discounted ownership with a dud first game and people focusing on Italy. Belgium contained Dzyuba in a way Finland likely won't be able to on Wednesday. In this matchup, Dzyuba has a strong floor with Finland allowing shots and chances created and a good ceiling with his goal upside.
For some cheaper attackers, I'm going to look right to Turkey. They all got a price decrease for us after rough first games in a brutally difficult matchup against Italy. They have a much softer matchup this time out against Wales, and the game log watchers will be nowhere near them on Wednesday. Burak Yilmaz ($17) has the best anytime scoring odds in this game at +250 and is the most prolific Turkish goal scorer on the team. He's coming off a good club season with Lille with 16 goals in Ligue 1. He's my favorite Turkish attacker on the slate followed by Hakan Calhanoglu ($14). He should be able to create several chances against this Wales defense as Turkey is likely to win the possession battle.
If you're looking for value attackers on this slate, it's slim pickings. A second Russian attacker like Denis Cheryshev ($13) or Magomed Ozdoev ($14) is a good way to get additional exposure to the attacking group with the best matchup on the slate.
If Domenico Berardi ($13) is not fit to play, there's a chance we see Federico Bernardeschi ($12) in the starting lineup for Italy. The Juventus attacker would become a good value play if he starts the game.
FanDuel DFS Defenders
Leonardo Spinazzola ($11) was superb in Italy's first game attacking down the flank. He was a key piece in my GPP takedowns on that first single-game slate, and I will be headed right back to him against Wednesday. He remains way too cheap for his role as an attacking wingback on a heavily favored side who should dominate possession stats. He has clear attacking upside, good defensive stats, and a clean sheet bonus is possible as well.
The entire Finland backline was busy defending Denmark in the first game and that resulted in great fantasy success for very cheap. I was on Paulus Arajuuri ($12) last game for a super cheap price, and he turned in a 23.2 fantasy point game. He should be very busy again as Russia try to break them down. He's in another nice spot for defensive peripherals and is a solid mid-tier play.
Mehmet Zeki Celik ($6) is one of my favorite value plays on this slate. I mentioned Celik's attacking upside last time Turkey was on the slate, but he was unable to show it in a difficult matchup with Italy. With Turkey likely controlling more of the game this time out, Celik will be able to get involved more. His attacking upside is stronger than anyone else in this price range, and he proved to be able to get very good defensive stats as well in the first game.
FanDuel DFS Goalkeepers
Despite conceding three times to Italy, Turkey actually has a fairly strong defense. They will now face a Wales team that does not have a ton of attacking firepower and whose best player - Gareth Bale - was essentially a no-show in the first game. Ugurcan Cakir ($10) will have a much more favorable matchup on Wednesday and is really affordable on this slate.
Anton Shunin ($12) is another one of my preferred GK plays. He probably has the best matchup on the slate against a Finland attacking unit that might be worse than Wales'. They were able to sneak a goal in on their only shot of the game against Denmark. I doubt they will be that fortunate again especially with Russia needing a good result.
Thanks for reading my EPL DFS lineup picks breakdown on RotoBaller and good luck!
