Analysis: The Mariners have a new face flirting with the closer role--strikeout machine Edwin Diaz. The #2 prospect in the Seattle organization has been fantastic this season. He has a 1.80 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, just 2.5 BB/9, and has been absolutely blowing opponents out of the water with a K/9 rate of 17.6 in 25 IP. Diaz started 2016 at Double-A Jackson and there he was also dominant with a 2.21 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, just 1.5 BB/9, and a deadly 12 K/9 in 40.2 total innings. He has been very successful in the majors this season by throwing his fastball 45% of the time at an average speed of 96.3 mph with a top speed of 101.4 mph, while he is throwing his slider 27.2% of the time at an average clip of 86.4 mph and a peak of 89.4 mph. If Steve Cishek is going to continue to pepper in blowup outings, Diaz will likely get to continue closing in Seattle. Given how dominant he has been all year, that makes Edwin Diaz incredibly valuable.
