Cincinnati Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco will be sidelined indefinitely after suffering his third concussion as a pro. He suffered the injury in the Red’s Saturday game against the Kansas City Royals. There is no timetable for his return as the Reds start to look for help filling his void to start the season.
The 26-year-old catcher just came off a season where he was voted to the All-Star Game. After a strong start to the season, Mesoraco only played in 114 games in 2014. Even after playing in only ⅔ of the team’s games, Mesoraco still managed to have great offensive production with 25 home runs, 80 runs batted in, and a .273 batting average. This was coming off of a 2013 season where he hit only .238 with 8 home runs in 103 games. The Reds were hoping for this jump in production to continue as the team battles for a NL Central title in 2015.
The Reds won’t know about Mesoraco’s Opening Day status until later in the spring. The everyday catching duties will likely be given to 33 year-old Brayan Pena. Until a time table is known for Mesoraco, the Reds won’t be on the market for a catcher. Reds fans have to wonder if, after a third concussion, the Reds might be hesitant to have Mesoraco return to catching duties full time.
