College Basketball Rankings: Top 10 NCAA Teams in the Country

There are plenty of polls--the Associated Press, ESPN, USAT Today, to name a few--but none look at the top college basketball teams in the land from the perspective of the fantasy hoops player.

So which teams rate in the Top 10, according to fantasy metrics? Each week, we'll be bringing you the top 10 NCAA Basketball teams in the nation.

For the week of January 12, 2016 (won-loss records as of press time).

1. Kansas, 14-1

Yes, the AP among others have ranked the Jayhawks as the best team in the country, too, based on their record and strength of schedule. But Bill Self's team is also one of the highest-scoring in the nation, averaging 88.4 points per game. Four Jayhawks are averaging in double figures in scoring, and point guard Frank Mason III is a statsheet filler.

2. Oklahoma, 13-1

Again, we'll stick with the pollsters here because the Big 12's basketball teams, like its football programs, are all about offense, offense, offense. Oklahoma is right behind Kansas in scoring, averaging 88.3 points per game, led by guard Buddy Hield, who simply fills the bucket.

3. Baylor, 12-3

Notice a theme? We'll stay in the Big 12 because while the Bears rank in most Top 25s, they place higher here for the way they move the basketball. As a team, they are tops in the nation in assists per game (21.1) and, likely as a result, have four players averaging in double figures in scoring.

4. Louisville, 13-3

Defense matters, too, and the Cardinals are one of the stingiest teams in the country. Rick Pitino's men average 5.4 blocked shots per game as well. It will be interesting to see if they can maintain or improve their defensive numbers, though, as they head into the meat of their ACC schedule.

5. West Virginia, 14-1

Too many Big 12 teams in our poll? Too bad. The Mountaineers are outliers in the conference because they are known more for the defense. Coach Bob Huggins' "Press Virginia" defense has the Mountaineers at the top of rankings for steals per game, and among the leaders in fewest points allowed.

6. North Carolina, 15-2

The Tar Heels are another top team that scores a lot, ranking in the top five in the country. Six--six!--Tar Heels players are averaging in double figures in scoring. Dean Smith would not be amused; then again, he didn't play fantasy.

7. Oakland, 10-7

The Golden Grizzlies are our first outliers--but look at the numbers: They have one of the highest scoring teams in the country, despite playing a difficult out-of-conference schedule to start the season (one that included then-No. 1 Michigan State). They should put up points against conference foes in the Horizon League as well.

8. Michigan State, 16-1

Speaking of Tom Izzo's men, if rebounding is a need, look to the Spartans. They average nearly 31 defensive boards per game, and are tops in the country in rebounding margin.

9. Providence, 14-2

The Friars make the list because they feature two elite players--that's right, two. Yes, point guard Kris Dunn gets all the ink, and rightly so, as he can score and dish. But sophomore forward Ben Bentil may be averaging a double-double (scoring and rebounding) by season's end.

10. South Carolina, 15-0

The Gamecocks haven't gotten a lot of love despite being undefeated, perhaps because they haven't been tested in the SEC just yet. SC also doesn't have any standout players from a fantasy perspective, although five players are averaging in double figures in scoring, led by Sindari Thornwell (12.6 PPG). Still, ballers looking for rebounding, defense, blocked shots and other less-than-glamorous categories might find worthwhile pieces here.
