Braves left-hander Mike Minor is going to spend Opening Day on the disabled list for the second straight season.
Minor, 27, started experiencing soreness prior to his first scheduled start this spring. An MRI showed inflammation, and an examination by Dr. James Andrews confirmed weakness and inflammation in Minor’s left rotator cuff. Minor had an injection in his pitching shoulder and will not throw for two weeks.
“They say there is nothing wrong structurally,” Minor told the Associated Press. “Hopefully, the stretching and shoulder excercises will knock it out.” Minor went on to mention the MRI showed no tearing or frays, which is encouraging.
Minor had his 2014 season delayed because of shoulder issues, making his first start on May 2nd. He went on to have a disappointing season, posting a Win-Loss record of 6-12 with an ERA of 4.77.
This could be troubling for the Braves, who selected Minor with the 7th overall pick of the 2009 MLB Draft. By 2010, he was already in the Major Leagues. Minor put together back-to-back successful seasons pitching in the Braves’ rotation in 2012 and 2013, starting 30 and 32 games, respectively.
Julio Teheran, Alex Wood, and Shelby Miller now sit atop the Atlanta rotation, with the other two spots now up for grabs.
