Eric Young Jr. has signed a minor league contract with the Atlanta Braves that also includes an invitation to spring training. The 29-year-old will be competing for a potential starting job in left field, if not a platoon role or to be the club’s fourth outfielder.
In 2015, Young will be entering his seventh season in the major leagues, after previous stints with the Rockies and Mets. Young didn’t really get to fully solidify himself until he came to New York in 2013, when he received ample playing time and racked up a career-high 46 stolen bases that season. For his career, the speedy outfielder has registered more than 25 steals three times including 76 combined over the past two campaigns, but has surpassed a .250 batting average only once.
At the moment, the Braves have B.J. Upton and newcomer Nick Markakis occupying two outfield spots. They also signed Jonny Gomes, who presumably will be Young’s main competition for the starting job in left field, if they don’t end up platooning.
