At one point during last season, Ronald Belisario had assumed the closer role for the Chicago White Sox. Now less than a year later, he’s settling for a minor league deal, which is exactly what the Blue Jays are bringing him in on with an invitation to spring training. If he makes the 25-man roster, the right-hand will command a $1.7 million salary.
Belisario finished with only eight saves, as he was wildly erratic and blew four games as well. Overall, he also had 12 holds, but recorded a dreadful 5.56 ERA and 1.45 WHIP, while opponents hit .295 off the 32-year-old in his first year since leaving the Dodgers.
The Blue Jays are looking for bullpen help and may have found someone who could get back on track in a less-pressure role. In two of his four seasons in Los Angeles, Belisario possessed an ERA less than 2.50, with the opposition hitting below .205 in those years as well, so Toronto may have netted themselves a solid bounce-back candidate. They also might need options to close after losing Casey Janssen yesterday to the Nationals.
