Arodys Vizcaino: Cheap Closer Comes With Skills

While no one actively roots for injury, when Jason Grilli went torn with a torn Achilles as he shot off to cover first base it meant that there was a void to be filled in the Braves’ ninth inning. This was initially filled by Jim Johnson, whose trade value was built up enough to then flip to the Dodgers.

After this, the keys to the ninth were given to the young arm of Vizcaino. He did well in 2015, posting a 1.60 ERA and 1.19 WHIP while striking out over a batter an inning. He does need to rein in the 3.48 BB/9 to a more manageable number, and you’d like to see him generate more grounders as opposed to having a fly ball be his most likely outcome on a batted ball (37.2% FB rate).

At the heart of it though, you have a guy in his age-25 season who throws a 97 MPH fastball and complements that with a plus curveball who successfully held down the ninth for the Braves at the end of 2015, and should continue to do so in 2016. He's being drafted as the 26th RP off the board according to NFBC ADP data (probably because no one thinks of the Braves as winning games). If you want Brad Ziegler over Vizcaino that is on you, but I'd much rather have Arodys.
