It is safe to say that the Cincinnati Reds’ rotation has some question marks, the biggest most likely being Homer Bailey. However another big question mark for the Reds is slated right behind Bailey in the rotation. Anthony DeSclafani, the sixth-round draft choice out of Florida back in 2011, has been somewhat frustrating when on the mound. His 2015 season was all over the place, and we never knew which Anthony DeSclafani would show up. Sometimes it was the dominant right-hander who, in September of 2015, held a loaded St. Louis Cardinals lineup to just four hits and one run in six innings while striking out ten. Other times we saw a young pitcher with little confidence, as was fully displayed when he surrendered six runs in five innings to a struggling Cleveland Indians lineup.
With some experience under his belt, Anthony DeSclafani should be able to settle down and establish some consistency in 2016. The Reds are counting on him to lead a young, unproven rotation through uncharted waters. Pressure can be a good thing for young pitchers, so an ERA in the mid-3.00’s and a WHIP in the neighborhood of 1.25 is not out of the question.
