ANALYSIS: Mariners reliever Roenis Elias put an incredibly poor month of May behind him, and is starting to look like the stud reliever he was when the season began. A quick look at Elias' splits for the season show a 2.16 ERA in March/April, a 6.97 ERA in May and a 2.57 ERA so far in June.
While one can't just completely ignore his terrible month of May, it does appear like Elias has corrected the issues that plagued him that month - namely a loss of control that led to a ghastly 6.97 BB/9. That number is down to a much more respectable 2.57 mark in June, although his strikeout rate has dropped to 7.71 as well.
Monthly splits aren't everything however, and it is clear that Elias is the reliever to own in Seattle now that he has earned a save in three of his last four appearances.
His 4.20 FIP and 4.43 SIERA point to some regression coming for the left-hander, but for those in 12+ team leagues who need saves, he's worth owning while he's still holding onto the ninth inning role. With virtually no one in Seattle who might compete with him, he could realistically be the closer for the rest of the season.
