ANALYSIS: All Cory Spangenberg has done in the second half so far is start an eight-game hitting streak with five multi-hit games, three home runs, and 10 RBI. This could be dismissed as a good week for a mediocre hitter, but there may be something more here. For his brief career, Spangenberg hits .308/.368/.502 in the second half of the season with a home run rate that doubles. He still has to prove he can sustain such a pace on a regular basis, however.
Spangenberg barely worked his way into the starting lineup late in April and eventually took over the third base job from Ryan Schimpf. He now holds down the hot corner full time, although he also qualifies at second base and outfield. The track record and name recognition may not be there, but Spangenberg was supposed to be the everyday second baseman last year until injury cost him nearly all of 2016. He is a former first-round pick that will be given every chance to prove his worth in San Diego. If you are in a deep enough league looking for help at either infield spot, Spangenberg can provide a good average and score a fair amount of runs, albeit with modest power.
