Roberto Osuna looked to be the clear favorite to resume the role of ninth-inning man in 2016, but the recent acquisition of reliever Drew Storen makes you wonder what the Blue Jays really have in store for Osuna. Osuna collected 20 saves and seven holds in only 68 games of his 2015 rookie campaign, and struck out 75 batters in 69.2 innings pitched. Opponents only batted .191 against him but plenty remains to be seen with Osuna’s future.
Storen owns more experience, once posting 43 saves for the Washington Nationals, and could jump in and close games if Osuna underperforms early on in 2016. Brett Cecil and Aaron Sanchez also linger around the closer discussion in Toronto, while the club might want to give Osuna an opportunity in their undecided starting rotation as well. As of now, there doesn’t appear to be any rumored competition between the two relievers. Osuna cracks the top-20 at his position as he would be a consistent saves threat if the job remains his throughout the year. It would still be wise to draft him with caution, and pay attention to the light spring training hopefully sheds on this situation.
