Zack Cozart Provides Surprising Power For A Shortstop

In 2014, Zack Cozart hit four home runs in 147 games. In 2015, Zack Cozart hit four home runs in the month of April alone. He would hit five more home runs before slipping on first base and suffering a horrific knee injury just 53 games into the season.

Before the injury, we were seeing positive trends in Cozart’s performance at the plate. He spent most of his time in the leadoff position, getting on base with Brandon Phillips, Todd Frazier, and Joey Votto hitting behind him. It’s definitely hard not to like those odds and Cozart began getting swept off the wavier wire in all leagues.

Power is hard to come by at the SS position, but Zack Cozart is an excellent source of it. His ISO increased from 0.79 in 2014 to .201 in 2015 with much more plate discipline. The Reds are missing Todd Frazier and will be looking for someone to step up and bring the thunder. Oddly enough, Zack Cozart may be that guy.
