While Brandon Phillips is a hometown hero in Cincinnati, his popularity hasn't matched his production at the plate. Unfortunately, the days of 20+ home runs in a season are over. He did hit 18 home runs in four straight seasons from 2010 to 2013, but the power has essentially disappeared since then. Thankfully, Phillips’ production in all other categories has been stable. Many analysts even look to 2015 as a sort of renaissance for Phillips, as he hit .294 and had the third-highest BABIP of his career (.315). Additionally, his 23 stolen bases were the most he had in a season since 2009, making a statement to the baseball community that he still has a lot left in the tank.
Brandon Phillips was linked to the Washington Nationals in some hot stove trade rumors this offseason. Nothing materialized, but if he is sent to the nation’s capital at some point during the 2016 season, he should see a slight boost in value. For now, temper your expectations as his position in the top 20 2B rankings is questionable.
