FPL Team Previews: Liverpool
After nearly pulling off an unequaled quadruple in the previous season, Liverpool fell flat and had one of its worst seasons under Jurgen Klopp. Sadio Mane left, summer signing Darwin Nunez couldn't hit water if he fell off a boat, and the team looked deflated in general. However, a late spring surge into fifth, coupled with some sizzling summer signings, has the Anfield faithful whispering "Klopp 2.0" as Liverpool looks to bounce back into title contention with Manchester City.
Last Year's Liverpool Stats
- League Finish: Fifth, 67 points
- Most goals: Mohamed Salah, 19 goals
- Most assists: Mohamed Salah, 13 assists
- Most FPL Points: Mohamed Salah, 239 points
Who is your favorite Liverpool defender for the upcoming FPL campaign?
- The FPL community gasped when it saw £8 million next to Trent Alexander-Arnold's name in July, but it's a justified price. Since he became a full-time starter during the 2018/19 season, his 59 FPL assists lead all defenders. The fact he compiled 156 points in a "down" year shows how much we expect from a man of his talents. Now, he could play in a new inverted midfield role that he thrived in down the stretch of last season. £8 million is nothing for Trent, and he's worth every penny.
Which Liverpool midfielder is catching your eye?
- The Reds start their preseason on Wednesday, and we should all watch how Diogo Jota is utilized. The Portuguese international dealt with some injuries last year but was very effective when called upon. Among midfielders (Jota has been reclassified from forward to midfielder) with at least 10 appearances, Jota's 0.62 npxGI/90 rate trailed only Kevin de Duyne and his teammate Mo Salah.
The Liverpool forward who will be bagging us some FPL points is...?
- If Liverpool stays healthy, it's a tough call to make between their two £7.5 million forwards, Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez. Gakpo is better suited for Klopp's pressing nature and has more versatility regarding where he can play on the pitch. Nunez is in and around the chances whenever he's on the field. Last year, he had the worst conversion percentage among forwards with at least 20 big chances in the English Premier League. Gakpo is the safe play, and Nunez has the ceiling.
Player | Big Chances | Big Chances Scored | Conversion Rate |
Harry Kane | 34 | 22 | 64.7% |
Erling Haaland | 59 | 31 | 52.5% |
Ivan Toney | 33 | 17 | 51.5% |
Callum Wilson | 31 | 15 | 48.4% |
Aleksandar Mitrovic | 24 | 11 | 45.8% |
Gabriel Jesus | 26 | 10 | 38.5% |
Ollie Watkins | 32 | 12 | 37.5% |
Darwin Nunez | 27 | 7 | 25.9% |
What run of fixtures favors Liverpool the most for the 2023/24 FPL season?
- Gameweek 9 will be the time to jump on three Liverpool assets. From then until Gameweek 16, the Reds play one top-eight team (Man City on the road) and play four of the six sides promoted to the Premier League in the last two seasons.
How many Liverpool players will you have in your FPL Gameweek 1 squad?
- In my drafts, it ranges from one to three. I have a just Salah draft, a just Trent draft, and a Salah-Trent and a £ 7.5 million player draft. Long story short, I'm all over the map. Having one Anfield asset in your squad feels necessary because Liverpool could come flying out of the gate and play Bournemouth in Gameweek 2. So having one means you don't have to scramble too much to get in a second for a potential haul.
What is one bold FPL prediction for any Liverpool player?
- Dominik Szoboszlai (£7 million) came over to Liverpool via RB Leipzig in the summer and brought an impressive Bundesliga resume. In the last two seasons, the Hungarian bagged 12 goals and 16 assists for his club and was instrumental in their runs to qualify for the Champions League. Outside Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold, Szoboszlai will be the highest-scoring Liverpool asset in the 2023/24 Fantasy Premier League season.
