Austin Swaim's fantasy football dark-horse candidates to finish as a WR1 in 2026. Target these five wide receivers with league-winning upside, including Rome Odunze and more.
You can lose your fantasy draft in the first round, but you can't win it. That requires diving outside the top 24 at an individual position and finding hidden gems like Jaxon Smith-Njigba a year ago.
Finding the formula is actually quite simple. First, we want target share -- and the higher, the better. Smith-Njigba's NFL-high 35.9% target share didn't exactly hurt his ascent to a WR1. Second, we want average depth of target (aDOT), meaning that real-life NFL teams trust the receiver to convert on valuable downfield targets. Of last year's WR1s, only Amon-Ra St. Brown had an aDOT lower than 8.5. And finally, we want red-zone targets. You have to get them in order to open up touchdown variance and cash in on a season with plenty of points.
Using this formula, here are my five favorite targets outside the current top 24 in average draft position (ADP) for 2026.

Rome Odunze, Chicago Bears

Everyone loves the Chicago Bears' trajectory. Everyone loves Ben Johnson. And Caleb Williams. And second-year targets like Luther Burden III (groin) and Colston Loveland.
Is there a hidden gem whizzing past them that is actually the fantasy breakout candidate that many are digging for around this offense?
Obviously, a major factor coming into the offseason was Rome Odunze's foot, but it "hasn't been an issue" in camp, according to Dan Wiederer of The Athletic. The former top-10 pick out of Washington is ready to resume a top role in the offense -- and one that might have been underrated last year through no fault of his.
Only 48 of Odunze's 90 targets last year (53.3%) were deemed catchable as Williams struggled with accuracy. If we want pieces of the Bears offense in fantasy because of projected improvement, shouldn't that also trickle to Odunze?

Through Week 4 and prior to his foot injury, he had a team-high 33 targets, 13 more than anyone else on the team. The then-second-year wideout also posted 2.08 yards per route run (YPRR).
It's very possible that Burden's outstanding production down the stretch was quelled if Odunze was 100%. There was also unintentional favoritism in that 85% of Burden's passes were catchable. That's variance that will even out year to year.
Odunze grades out excellent in the formula I defined in the intro. Even with a bum foot, he was fifth in the NFL in aDOT (14.5) among guys with at least 50 targets. He tied Loveland for the team lead in red zone targets (12) despite missing five games.
I think he's Chicago's top pass catcher. That opinion is a little more popular now that Burden is projected to miss the beginning of the season.
Parker Washington, Jacksonville Jaguars
RotoBaller's Consensus ADP: 72.5 (WR31)
Personally, I haven't dove into the Jaguars' wide receiver trio much in early drafts. It seems like a mess that, while periodically injecting Travis Hunter doses, might produce weekly headaches.
However, if there's a guy whose end to 2025 deserves a shout here, it's Parker Washington, who leaped up to WR2 on the team's first official depth chart. That was ahead of Hunter, which is not how 2025 started.
Frankly, the former Penn State standout was the team's go-to guy for the final five games of the season, including their Wild Card contest against Buffalo. He led the team in targets (41) by eight during this stretch.
That torrid finish left a notable imprint on his season-long stats. He was 21st in aDOT (13.1) among those who saw at least 50 targets. He trailed Jakobi Meyers (15) by just one red zone target with 14 looks.
This was despite running just 107 routes in the first 10 weeks of the season, as Hunter was healthy.
Trevor Lawrence really gravitated toward Washington late, which is why he's the highest-drafted Jaguars receiver in 2026 drafts. I get it. Compared to Meyers' known yardage limitations and Brian Thomas Jr.'s inconsistency as a downfield, boundary target, he's got the best chance.
Michael Wilson, Arizona Cardinals
RotoBaller's Consensus ADP: 97.6 (WR41)
Is it cheating to take last year's WR13, who is being drafted as a WR41? Some might say it's unwise to fade such an obvious market correction. I think it's just bias that Michael Wilson doesn't deserve to face.
Now, was Wilson's torrid finish a product of a Marvin Harrison Jr. injury, combined with the Cardinals unexpectedly leading the NFL in pass attempts (649)?
Absolutely, and I can't and won't bank on either of those things again. But this is still a team with a mediocre-to-bad defense, and Jacoby Brissett has proven that he's capable of making magic happen in garbage time.
The defined pecking order of Trey McBride's monopoly on targets might not be appropriate. Mike LaFleur and Nathaniel Hackett now bring a Sean McVay-esque offensive scheme that is typically friendlier to "Z" receivers than boundary ones or tight ends. That's Wilson.
Even so, I'm a big believer that Wilson proved targets aren't earned. Coaches just reward those who actually produce with them. Wilson was buried, but he became a 1,000-yard receiver, and he's now ripping up training camp. If it walks and talks like a duck, it might be a duck.

Wilson's 12.2 aDOT beat out George Pickens and A.J. Brown a year ago. Even though McBride (33) led the way in red zone looks, Wilson (14) beat out Harrison Jr. (10) in that category.
Like Washington, it's just the slow process of building public trust after limited opportunities early in his career. He wasn't putting up huge college numbers at Stanford in a pre-transfer portal era of college football, either. "Overlooked" might be the name of his memoir.
Matthew Golden, Green Bay Packers
RotoBaller's Consensus ADP: 117.2 (WR48)
It feels like Groundhog Day that we, as fantasy analysts, sell you Green Bay Packers wideouts every year, and Matt LaFleur establishes the run to a frustrating end. I try to avoid doing that, but Matthew Golden is an interesting name to bring up in this discussion.
Quietly, Romeo Doubs had outstanding peripheral stats in the same conversation a year ago. Doubs was tied for ninth in red zone targets (17) across the whole league and only caught five touchdowns. He was 18th in aDOT. If he stayed put, this would be him.
Luckily, I don't have to guess who is stepping into Doubs' vacated boundary role. Quarterback Jordan Love leaked weeks ago that it'll be Golden.
The first Packers wide receiver drafted in the first round since 2002 might actually get to play this year? Hot dog. Golden was, to some evaluators like The Ringer's Todd McShay, the best receiving prospect in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Of course, the million-dollar question with the Packers is if LaFleur will ever unleash Love and get away from last year's 4.4% rush rate over expectation, per nfelo. That was the ninth-highest in the league. Josh Jacobs' legal issues and difficulty staying healthy could force his hand.
Tucker Kraft is returning from a torn ACL. Christian Watson has missed 17 games in the last three years. Jayden Reed missed 10 games last year. This is an injury-prone group where the surviving member — in an offense that passes more — could be a hidden gem.
Jaylin Noel, Houston Texans
RotoBaller's Consensus ADP: 267.8 (WR95)
A few days ago, this spot was going to belong to Jayden Higgins. Higgins' torn ACL has sort of proved why I've now put Jaylin Noel in this spot.
Like Green Bay, the Texans wide receivers can't stay healthy, either. Higgins is now out for 2026, Nico Collins has battled concussions and/or hamstring issues for three years, and Tank Dell is returning from as significant a knee injury as it gets.
Theoretically, someone is going to have to catch passes for Houston, especially when the team ranked 22nd in rushing. The team brought in David Montgomery and shuffled a few offensive linemen to try to get toward the league average.
Jaylin Noel might be the next story similar to Washington and Wilson. He's buried by pedigree and draft capital on this loaded depth chart, but in games where he played at least 30% of the snaps, he had a higher YPRR (1.64) than Higgins (1.57).
Christian Kirk, who departed for San Francisco but played 13 games last year, is a major reason the slot receiver never saw the field consistently. He's out of town.
Coming out of Iowa State, Noel ran a 4.39-second 40-yard dash with electric separation skills. He was rumored to potentially be a top-50 pick. The best is yet to come, especially if C.J. Stroud can return to closer to his rookie form.

Is WR1 insane? Absolutely, at this moment. I, obviously, love Collins' projected role in this offense. However, if the oft-injured Pro Bowler is out of the lineup for an extended stretch, I really believe Noel has the talent to carry a substantial target share in the NFL.
