PGA Championship - Course Information

Course Architect:

  • Course Architect: Donald Ross (1928)
  • Recent Renovations: Gil Hanse (2017)

Comparable Courses:

  • Oak Hill Country Club (East Course) – 2023 PGA Championship – RESULTS
    • The East Course at Oak Hill is one of the closest analogs due to its Donald Ross foundation and its recent use for the 2023 PGA Championship. Like Aronimink, Oak Hill features demanding par-70 conditions, heavily contoured greens, and a setup that rewards disciplined approach play. Both courses ask players to control trajectory into firm, sloped greens while navigating strategically placed bunkering rather than relying on distance alone.
  • East Lake Golf Club – TOUR Championship – RESULTS
    • East Lake shares the Donald Ross design influence through its renovation history and TOUR Championship usage. While East Lake plays more modern and scoreable, it still mirrors Aronimink in its emphasis on precision iron play and positioning into greens. Both courses reward players who can consistently gain strokes on approach and avoid big numbers rather than simply overpowering the field off the tee.
  • Philadelphia Cricket Club (Wissahickon) – 2025 Truist Championship – RESULTS
    • The Wissahickon Course at Philadelphia Cricket Club is another strong comp given its Ross-inspired routing and recent role as a PGA TOUR venue. Like Aronimink, it features tight driving corridors, firm playing conditions, and small, highly strategic greens. The similarity lies in how both courses force players into positional golf, where angles into greens matter as much as distance.
  • Oakmont Country Club– 2025 U.S. Open – RESULTS
    • Oakmont Country Club is a strong comp. to Aronimink Golf Club due to both its geographic proximity in the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic region and its shared emphasis on classic, precision-based championship golf. With recent Gil Hanse renovation work, Oakmont maintains its identity as one of the most demanding ball-striking tests in the world, built around firm conditions, highly contoured greens, and a premium on distance control into difficult putting surfaces.

PGA Championship - Course/Tournament History

Aronimink Golf Club was founded in 1896 in Philadelphia before relocating to Newtown Square, Pennsylvania in 1928. The club’s current course was designed by legendary architect Donald Ross, who considered Aronimink one of his finest creations. Ross famously stated that the course represented his “masterpiece,” and the layout has remained one of the premier classical golf designs in the United States.

Since opening, Aronimink has hosted numerous prestigious championships and professional events. The club hosted the 1962 PGA Championship, won by Gary Player, and later welcomed events such as the 1977 U.S. Amateur, the 1997 U.S. Junior Amateur, the 2003 Senior PGA Championship, and the 2010 and 2011 AT&T National tournaments. More recently, Aronimink hosted the 2018 BMW Championship, won by Keegan Bradley, and the 2020 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, won by Kim Sei-young.

Over the years, the course has undergone several renovations to modernize the layout while preserving Ross’s original vision. Architect Gil Hanse led a major restoration project in the 2010s that restored many of Ross’s original design elements, including green complexes, bunkering, and fairway shaping.

The PGA Championship, one of golf’s four major championships, was first contested in 1916 and is organized by the PGA of America. Originally played as a match play event, the tournament transitioned to stroke play in 1958, aligning it with the other three major championships.

The PGA Championship is known for consistently featuring one of the strongest fields in golf, often including the highest percentage of top-100 players in the world rankings. Over the years, the event has crowned legendary champions such as Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, and Brooks Koepka.

Traditionally held in August, the PGA Championship moved to May beginning in 2019 as part of a revamped golf calendar, making it the second major of the season. The event is also unique because it includes 20 PGA Club Professionals in the field each year, showcasing the PGA of America’s connection to all levels of the game.

The tournament is played at a rotating collection of prestigious venues across the United States and has delivered many memorable finishes throughout its history. Its combination of elite competition, difficult setups, and historic courses has helped solidify its place as one of the sport’s premier championships.

The Wanamaker Trophy is awarded annually to the winner of the PGA Championship and is considered one of the most prestigious trophies in golf. It was named after Rodman Wanamaker, who played a major role in founding the PGA of America and supporting professional golf in the early 1900s.

First presented at the inaugural PGA Championship in 1916 at Siwanoy Country Club, the Wanamaker Trophy has become a lasting symbol of major championship success. Standing over two feet tall and weighing nearly 30 pounds, it remains one of the most recognizable trophies in sports.

PGA Championship - Course Guide/ Scorecard

Originally designed by Donald Ross in 1928, Aronimink Golf Club features a classic par 70 layout with four par 3s, twelve par 4s, and two par 5s.

The course has undergone several restorations over the years aimed at preserving Ross’s original design while adapting it for modern championship play. Most notably, the green complexes were restored, and bunkering was refined to re-emphasize strategic angles and demand precise iron play into elevated and heavily contoured greens. Select fairways have also been reworked to restore original routing intent while maintaining the course’s traditional parkland character.

At 7,394 yards, Aronimink Golf Club ranks among the longer courses on TOUR, coming in eighth out of 44 in the rotation. It offers little forgiveness off the tee, with fairways averaging just 32 yards wide, the 14th narrowest on TOUR, paired with thick, penal rough. The greens are relatively large at approximately 8,200 square feet, but their contours make them difficult to attack.

Bunkering is a defining feature, with 176 bunkers on the property, the most on TOUR, heavily influencing both tee and approach shots. Instead of simply penalizing misses with hazards alone, Aronimink challenges players through angles, elevation changes, and green complexes that require careful decision-making from tee to green.

PGA Championship - Notable Par 3s

Aronimink Golf Club’s par 3s range from 171 to 242 yards, with three falling in the 226+ yard range. Despite their beauty, these holes present a significant challenge. In the 2018 BMW Championship, the two par 3s that played over par were No. 8 and No. 17.

Hole 5 | Par 3 | 171 Yards

A classic Donald Ross par 3, bunkers form a semi-circle around the front half of the green, requiring an accurate shot to get close to the hole on a challenging green complex.

Hole 8 | Par 3 | 242 Yards

This long downhill par 3 can play to a variety of distances depending on where the hole is cut each day and which teeing area is selected, putting a premium on club selection. The green almost connects to the 10th green behind it, with just a small section of fairway separating them.

Hole 14 | Par 3 | 216 Yards

Sand surrounds most of this left-to-right angled green on this challenging par 3. Find the middle of the green and players will have a birdie opportunity but missing the green will make for a challenging up and down to save par.

Hole 17 | Par 3 | 229 Yards

Designed for drama, this long, slightly downhill par 3 could significantly affect the outcome of the Championship. Any ball heading to the left will likely find the pond that runs down the entire left side of the green. The safe shot is to the middle of the large putting surface, but that will almost certainly leave a difficult two-putt. The front right hole location just beyond the bunker will also create a lot of challenges.

PGA Championship - Notable Par 4s

There are twelve Par 4s at Aronimink Golf Club, with the majority of those holes ranging between 400 and 500 yards. No. 13 is the shortest, listed at 385 yards, with the longest being No. 15, playing 546 yards. In terms of scoring average, the toughest par 4 at the 2018 BMW Championship was the 10th hole.

Hole 6 | Par 4 | 402 Yards

Nearly a dozen bunkers guard the right side of the fairway on this short uphill dogleg-right Par-4, beginning where the hole bends and proceeding all the way to the green. Laying up short of the three bunkers on the left should leave a short approach into a tricky green that has a lot of movement and challenges.

Hole 11 | Par 4 | 425 Yards

More than 20 bunkers protect this hole, almost evenly divided between the two sides of the fairway and around the green. Distance and spin control must be precise on the short uphill approach to the green: Landing short or imparting too much spin can result in the ball coming back as far as 50 yards into the fairway. Another very challenging green complex will test even the best players in the world.

Hole 15 | Par 4 | 546 Yards

A new tee box turned this into the longest par-4 on the golf course. The tee shot should aim to the right side and use the right-to-left slope of the fairway. The green is one of the largest on property and with an open front allows players to run the ball onto the green if needed.

Hole 18 | Par 4 | 490 Yards

Trees on both sides and a trio of bunkers on the right side of the fairway are certain to affect a player’s tee-shot strategy. The approach is uphill to a large, terraced green that offers many interesting hole locations. Hole locations will likely favor the four corners of this challenging finishing green complex.

PGA Championship - Notable Par 5s

There are only two Par 5s on the course: No. 9 and No. 16. Both of these holes had a scoring average under par in 2018. Hole No. 16 was the easiest hole on the course in 2018, with a scoring average of 0.618 below par.

Hole 9 | Par 5 | 605 Yards

Long, straight, and punctuated by side-to-side clusters of bunkers edging into the landing areas for both the first and second shots, the longest hole on the course climbs steadily uphill towards the clubhouse and the highest point on the property. The green is one of the least severe on the course as Donald Ross (architect) originally intended this to be a long two-shot hole.

Hole 16 | Par 5 | 555 Yards

Many contestants should be able to reach this par 5 in two, but only if they can hit their long approach shots very high and hold the wide, but shallow, green. A long, deep bunker on each side of the putting surface adds to the challenge. Birdies should be plentiful and another exciting hole to view.
