BALLER MOVE: Target in Late Rounds as Low End SS1
ANALYSIS: Last season was a year of tears for Jean Segura owners. However, the anti-Segura sentiment has swung far enough that he can once again be considered a sleeper. We’ve seen his best and his worst, so it’s likely he’ll be somewhere in the middle in 2015.
Segura’s batting average and BABIP each fell almost 50 points from 2013, but his GB:FB ratio (2.59) and drive rate (18.3%) were basically identical to his marks from his rookie campaign. So in 2014, Segura puts a ton of balls in play and managed to find a lot of gloves. Having been on base just 28.9% of the time in 2014, Segura's stolen base opportunities declined, and with it his stolen base total. He simply isn’t a power hitter, and to expect double-digit homers from him, which he hasn't managed since Single-A, is foolish. His strikeout rate did drop from 13.5% to 12.6%, and his BB% increased from 4.0% to 5.0%. Segura will likely be ignored by most fantasy owners, and could be a good value late. He’s a solid bet for a bounce-back season in 2015.
