The Houston Texans' running back Joe Mixon looked fantastic at the beginning of his season, as he rushed 30 times for 159 yards and had one touchdown in the win over the Indianapolis Colts.
Unfortunately, in Week 2 against the Chicago Bears, Mixon suffered an ankle injury that kept him sidelined for most of the game. Mixon did return at some point but was later taken off the field for the rest of the game.
So, is Joe Mixon hurt or healthy? Will Mixon play in Week 3 against the Minnesota Vikings? Let's dive in.
Because of this, Mixon's availability for Sunday's game against the Vikings is uncertain. Backup running back Dameon Pierce (hamstring) was also listed as DNP. Cam Akers would be expected to take on a more significant role if Mixon cannot play this weekend.
Fantasy managers will need to see Mixon practice in a limited capacity if you want any hope of Mixon playing this week. More information will be released before Sunday.
If Joe Mixon plays this week, fantasy managers should view him as a risky RB2 start due to his ongoing battle with an ankle injury. While Mixon's potential for a solid performance against the Vikings could be enticing, his health status raises concerns about his effectiveness and workload.
The Texans' game plan might be adjusted to limit his touches or utilize him more conservatively to avoid aggravating the injury.
Given these uncertainties, fantasy managers should be cautious and prepared for possible limited production from Mixon, making him a high-risk, high-reward option for this week's lineup.
If Joe Mixon doesn't play, Cam Akers would be a solid Flex option in fantasy lineups for this week’s game against the Vikings.
With Mixon and Pierce possibly sidelined, Akers would be expected to take on a significant workload, which includes a higher volume of carries and potential red zone opportunities.
The Vikings' defense has shown vulnerabilities against the run, providing Akers with a favorable matchup on which to capitalize. Given the increased role and advantageous matchup, Akers could deliver valuable fantasy points, making him a worthwhile Flex play in place of Mixon.
Fantasy managers need to monitor Mixon's practice activity closely this week before making lineup decisions.
