Over the course of the season I’ll be giving you two players at second base and shortstop per week who I think can help your team. These players are usually widely available in any format, and should turn nice profits in the weeks to come.
As always, feel free to reach out to me directly @Roto_Dubs with any questions about the middle infield or fantasy baseball in general.
Editor’s Note: to read about even more waiver wire options for second base and shortstop, be sure to check out our famous waiver wire pickups list which is a running list that is updated daily.
Second Base (2B) Waiver Wire Pickups
Delino DeShields (TEX) - Owned in 30.9% of Fleaflicker leagues
DeShields has been thriving at the top of the capable Rangers lineup in recent weeks, hitting .333 with over his last 15 games. He’s also swiped three bags over that time span, bringing him to 16 on the season. He should continue to score runs and steal bags, making him incredibly useful in roto formats. He’s not without value in points leagues, but since he won’t rack up RBIs and total bases, he’s still more of a fifth outfielder or middle infielder.

Scooter Gennett (MIL) - Owned in 5.8% of Fleaflicker leagues
I don’t get how Gennett’s ownership percentage is still so low. In his last 30 games (roughly around the time he was recalled from Triple-A), Gennett is hitting .364 with 13 runs scored, two homers, 11 RBIs, and only six total strikeouts. He’s hitting the ball, he’s scoring runs, and he’s doing it all from the bottom of the lineup. He should move up relatively soon, although since it’s the hapless Brewers who knows. He’s bordering on must-own territory at a relatively thin position.

Shortstop (SS) Waiver Wire Pickups
Jed Lowrie (HOU) - Owned in 8.2% of Fleaflicker leagues
Lowrie has just begun his rehab stint after being on the shelf since late April. While Carlos Correa and Jose Altuve are locked in up the middle, Lowrie should see ample playing time at the corner infield positions and spelling both of the aforementioned middle infielders. Prior to landing on the disabled list, Lowrie was having an excellent season, hitting .300 with four homers, 10 RBIs and 11 runs scored in just 60 at-bats. I think he’ll play his way right back into fantasy relevance in any format, so stash him now if you’ve got the room.
Baller Move: Add in points leagues with 10+ teams/add in roto leagues with 10+ teams
Jung-ho Kang (PIT) - Owned in 29.2% of Fleaflicker leagues
While Kang hasn’t shown the power many expected from him at this point, he is still providing plenty of fantasy value. With Josh Harrison and Jordy Mercer out for an extended period of time, Kang will be an everyday starter (likely at SS with the arrival of Aramis Ramirez). He’s hitting .285 on the season with 32 runs scored and 31 RBIs over 249 at-bats, so the counting stats are there even if he’s not hitting for much power. He’s currently useful in any format.
