Zack Gelof 2025 Player Outlook: Looking To Improve After Down Season
22 mins agoAthletics second baseman Zach Gelof was one of the biggest disappointments in fantasy last season and will need to improve this year to warrant value in mixed leagues. Drafters had high hopes for the sophomore second baseman last season after he launched 14 homers in 69 games as a rookie in 2023. In double the games, however, Gelof could only muster 17 bombs to go along with a putrid .362 slugging percentage. To make matters worse, Gelof batted only .211 thanks to a whopping 34.4% strikeout rate, which was a full 10 percentage points higher than the second ranked 2B. His advanced metrics don't show much reason for optimism either, as his .199 xBA, .276 wOBA, and .271 xwOBA all ranked in the bottom 20% of qualified hitters. Despite his struggles last season, it's impossible to ignore the upside he flashed as a rookie when he slugged .504 to go along with 72 runs-plus-RBI and stole 14 bases. He shouldn't be drafted in 12-team mixed leagues, but there is bounce-back potential as a sleeper middle infielder in deeper rotisserie leagues and AL-Only formats. He's currently being drafted outside the top 250 overall players, so he could be worth a flier as a late-round selection with the hope a change of scenery helps him as the A's head to Sacramento.
