Yuki Matsui, Padres Agree On Four-Year Deal
11 months agoJapanese free-agent left-handed reliever Yuki Matsui and the San Diego Padres agreed in principle on a four-year, $21 million deal on Wednesday. With All-Star left-handed closer Josh Hader set to leave the Padres in free agency this winter, Matsui could be tabbed as San Diego's primary closer in 2024 in his very first year in the majors in the United States. Matsui isn't imposing with his size, but he had over 300 career saves in Nippon Professional Baseball and figures to have a pretty big opportunity in a late-inning, high-leverage role for the Friars next season. The 27-year-old southpaw should be relevant in mixed fantasy leagues for saves and holds after posting a 1.42 ERA and a 36.4 percent strikeout rate in the last three years with the Rakuten Eagles in Japan.
