Willie Calhoun Has Chance To Earn Spot
6 years agoTexas Rangers infielder/outfielder Willie Calhoun has a real shot to earn an Opening Day roster spot if he proves himself in spring training. "I’d mention Willie Calhoun as a guy that we’re definitely excited to see how it’s going to play out," general manager Jon Daniels said. "I’ve seen the work that he’s put in. I’m specifically looking to recognize him here because just because he really committed to his career this offseason. I appreciate that." Calhoun worked closely with strength and conditioning coach Jose Vazquez and nutritionist Stephanie Fernandes and has also put more emphasis on his defensive work. The problem is that Calhoun won't be guaranteed consistent playing time even if he wins a roster spot. The 24-year-old has disappointed in his 48 games in the big leagues the last two years, hitting .233 with three homers, 15 RBI and 31 strikeouts in 133 at-bats. There is upside left as a post-hype sleeper, but Calhoun is merely a late-round stab in deep mixed leagues.
