Vikings Have Big Plans For Irv Smith Jr.
5 years agoMinnesota Vikings rookie tight end Irv Smith Jr., who was taken 50th overall in this year's draft, is extremely athletic and can create mismatches with linebackers or safeties in the middle of the field. He has obvious upside as a pass-catcher but has also shown improvement as a run-blocker in training camp. Smith is expected to have a sizeable role in his rookie season, and the expectation is that he'll develop into a rare complete tight end that will be a "big part" of Gary Kubiak's and Kevin Stefanski's offense, according to general manager Rick Spielman. Tight ends have accounted for an average of 23 percent of targets in Kubiak's offenses in his 21 seasons. However, only two rookie tight ends have had more than 600 yards receiving in the last 16 years, so temper expectations for Smith. He'll also be behind Kyle Rudolph, so consider him merely a dynasty asset for now.
