Tre'Quan Smith Making A Push
6 years agoWith New Orleans Saints wide receiver Cameron Meredith a work in progress after missing a couple weeks with an unspecified injury in training camp, rookie Tre'Quan Smith is rising up the depth chart. Meredith has no catches in 48 preseason snaps, including a dropped pass that turned into an interception. He played mostly with the backups in Saturday's preseason action. Ted Ginn Jr. could once again serve as the underrated No. 2 this year behind Michael Thomas. However, Ginn was called out for running the wrong route twice in the second preseason game, and the rookie Smith has been one of the most exciting players in training camp. He continues to make splash plays in both practices and games and has shown a nice combination of size, speed, hands and big-play ability and leads the team in catches (11), yards (147) and touchdowns (one) in the preseason. Smith has mostly been limited to playing the Z position, though. Austin Carr played as the primary slot receiver ahead of Meredith this weekend and caught three passes for 38 yards. Meredith has bounce-back potential as a late-round flier, but it all depends on his health. Smith has the upside, but it's clear he still needs to learn and he could struggle to produce consistently in his rookie season.
