Starlin Castro Becomes Free Agent
5 years agoThe Miami Marlins declined their $16 million option on second baseman Starlin Castro and will instead pay him a $1 million buyout, allowing him to become a free agent this winter. The 29-year-old was ice-cold in the first half in 2019 but rebounded to hit .270 with a career-high 22 home runs and 86 RBI for the lowly Marlins. He also played in all 162 games. The 10-year veteran provides solid contact skills and a decent average for fantasy owners, but his power leaves a lot to be desired and he's not the best defender at the keystone. He could become more attractive in deep mixed and single-universe leagues depending on where he winds up, but he won't be guaranteed an everyday starting role like he had in Miami in 2019.
