Shohei Ohtani Commits To Home Run Derby
4 years agoLos Angeles Angels two-way star Shohei Ohtani became the first MLB player to announce that he will take part in next month's Home Run Derby. Ohtani ranks third in the league with 19 home runs. He won the Nippon Professional Baseball Home Run Derby and was the MVP of its All-Star game in 2016. Ohtani will be the first Japanese-born player to take part in MLB's Home Run Derby, and the first to do so after making at least one pitching start. The 26-year-old has an OPS over .950 and has an ERA under 2.90 in over 10 starts. He also ranks first in barrels per plate appearance, fifth in average home run distance and fifth in average exit velocity, making him a must-start both as a hitter and pitcher each time he's on the field.
