Sam Howell To Compete For Starting Job
2 years agoWashington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera said on Tuesday that quarterback Sam Howell is "not our starter" at the position, but he'll begin the offseason as the QB1 and will have an opportunity to win the job in training camp this summer. The Commanders plan to bring in a veteran QB to compete with Howell. The team just released Carson Wentz, and Taylor Heinicke will be a free agent. Howell, a fifth-rounder last year, made one start in his rookie season and went 11-for-19 for 169 yards, one TD and one pick in Week 18 against the Dallas Cowboys. The 22-year-old has plenty of weapons to work with in D.C., but he'll surely have his growing pains if he enters next season as Washington's starter in Week 1.
