Saints Optimistic About Jared Cook In 2020
5 years agoNew Orleans Saints tight end Jared Cook was a disappointment halfway through his first season with the team last year. But Cook's last eight games -- he averaged 19.2 yards per catch -- gave the Saints optimism heading into 2020. New Orleans signed the veteran after he nearly racked up 900 receiving yards with the Raiders in 2018. "We just know he is a one-on-one nightmare, he is a matchup nightmare for a defense. I don’t know how to cover the guy. I wouldn’t know what to tell them," tight ends coach Dan Campbell said. Part of the reason for Cook's slow start is that he was injured in training camp and didn't get a single snap with Drew Brees in the preseason. Brees also suffered an injury in Week 2 and missed five weeks. Cook caught just 11 passes when Brees was sidelined. He caught 28 passes for 537 yards in the final eight games, and his seven touchdown catches in the second half led all tight ends. Cook ranked first among qualifying tight ends with 10 or more targets in both yards per catch (19.2) and yards per target (14.1) in the second half. The 33-year-old is in a great offense, but he might not see as many targets now that Emmanuel Sanders is in the mix. Cook will be a touchdown-dependent, low-end TE1/high-end TE2 in 2020.
