Royals, Whit Merrifield Agree On Four-Year Extension
6 years agoThe Kansas City Royals signed second baseman Whit Merrifield to a four-year, $16.25 million extension on Sunday, according to a source. The deal also includes $2 million in performance bonuses and a fifth-year club option. Merrifield's deal can top $30 million if he maxes out on the contract. It's well-earned for the 30-year-old after he led all of baseball in 2018 with 192 hits and 45 stolen bases on top of a .304/.367/.438 slash line and 12 home runs and 60 RBI in 158 games. Merrifield has become a top-50 overall fantasy player and is a top-10 second baseman for fantasy owners and he can also play the outfield. Speed is obviously his main asset, but he also makes a ton of contact, gets on base frequently and hits for average.
