Rockies Avoid Arbitration With Mychal Givens
4 years agoThe Colorado Rockies signed right-handed reliever Mychal Givens to a one-year, $4.05 million deal on Thursday to avoid salary arbitration. The Rockies traded for Givens in a deal with the Orioles on Aug. 3, and he allowed at least one run in five of his 10 outings for Colorado. He allowed two runs in 13 innings over 12 games for Baltimore before being dealt to the Rockies. Combined, he went 1-1 with a 3.61 ERA and will turn 31 years old on May 13 of this year. The second-round pick in 2009 is 21-17 with a 3.41 ERA and 21 saves in 345 1/3 innings in his career. Daniel Bard figures to open the season as the Rockies closer, with Givens serving in a late-inning setup role. Coors Field isn't the best place to make a name for a relief pitcher, making Givens mostly unattractive for fantasy purposes.
