Rays Close To Acquiring Mike Zunino, Guillermo Heredia
6 years agoThe Tampa Bay Rays and Seattle Mariners are working on a possible deal on Wednesday that would send Mariners catcher Mike Zunino and outfielder Guillermo Heredia to Tampa in exchange for outfielder Mallex Smith and possibly a minor league prospect, according to multiple major league baseball sources. The teams are trying to finalize the trade in the coming days and the players must pass their physicals. Zunino's defensive skills are top notch, but his bat, although it has plenty of pop, has been a work in progress. He has struck out in 34 percent of his plate appearances in the big leagues. You'll have to live with a low average, but Zunino is an acceptable mixed league catcher due to his power. Heredia is mainly a fourth-outfielder type and hit .236/.318/.342 with five homers and 19 RBI in 125 games for the M's in 2018. He'll likely serve as bench depth for the Rays. Smith is a speedster that hit .296/.367/.406 with 27 doubles, 10 triples, two home runs, 40 RBI and 40 stolen bases in 141 games. If he's playing regularly for Seattle, he'll certainly be attractive to fantasy owners because of his wheels.
