Rafael Montero Not Expected To Be Ready
4 years agoTexas Rangers relief pitcher Rafael Montero is not expected to be ready in time for Opening Day on July 24 because he's behind the other pitchers in summer camp due to a late arrival because of a family issue. Montero is on the 40-man roster and is out of minor league options, but the 30-man limit to begin the 2020 season will give the Rangers more options. The 29-year-old Dominican righty missed all of the 2018 season due to Tommy John surgery, but he looked sharp in 22 relief outings for Texas last year, posting a 2.48 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 34 strikeouts in 29 innings. When he's ready, he could have a high-leverage setup role in Texas' bullpen, but he's not much of a fantasy option unless he falls into ninth-inning duties at some point.
