Phillies Acquire Jose Alvarado In Three-Team Trade
4 years agoThe Philadelphia Phillies acquired left-handed relief pitcher Jose Alvarado in a three-team trade on Tuesday involving the Tampa Bay Rays and Los Angeles Dodgers. The Rays sent Alvarado to the Phillies, the Phillies sent left-hander Garrett Cleavinger to the Dodgers and the Dodgers sent infielder Dillon Paulson and a player to be named to the Rays. Alvarado, 25, has a career ERA of 3.46 in 149 outings over four seasons with Tampa Bay. He posted a rough 6.00 ERA in just nine appearances in the shortened 2020 season. The southpaw had a 2.39 ERA in a career-high 70 games in 2018, and he has 15 career saves on his ledger as well. Alvarado figures to be the primary setup man for closer Hector Neris in Philadelphia, and his acquisition should help improve a bullpen that was injured and ineffective in 2020. While he won't have much fantasy appeal in a setup role, Alvarado can be a handcuff for those that roster Neris.
