Pete Alonso To Defend Home Run Derby Crown
4 years agoNew York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso announced on Wednesday that he will defend his Home Run Derby crown during next month's All-Star festivities. The Polar Bear beat Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the 2019 Home Run Derby. There was no Home Run Derby last year due to COVID-19. Alonso was the second rookie to win the event after Aaron Judge did so in 2017. His 57 total home runs in the Derby in 2019 were the fourth-most in the history of the event. Alonso has just 11 home runs this season, but he has gone deep three times in six games played at Coors Field this year. Only three players in the history of the Derby have won the event twice. Alonso is leading the Mets with a .788 OPS, but he's been underwhelming in the first half of 2021. His underlying metrics suggest he should have a better second half, so he's a good buy-low candidate.
