Pedro Strop Has Hamstring Strain
6 years agoChicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon announced on Tuesday that closer Pedro Strop is dealing with a mild right hamstring strain. He is able to play catch, but the Cubs will keep him off a mound and out of game-related drills for the next week. Chicago is being especially cautious because of the fact that relief pitcher Brandon Morrow (elbow) is still building up his arm strength with a long-toss program. Morrow will likely miss around a month of the regular season. If Strop isn't ready by Opening Day, Maddon will likely mix and match in the late innings, with Steve Cishek, Brad Brach and Carl Edwards Jr. representing three closing options. Strop was excellent for the Cubs last year, posting a 2.26 ERA in 60 games and served as the primary closer with Morrow injured in the second half. Still, he's only a low-end closing option with Morrow potentially getting his job back when healthy.
