Paul Skenes To Start For National League In All-Star Game
5 months agoArizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo, the manager of the National League All-Stars this year, announced on the Dan Patrick Show on Friday that Pittsburgh Pirates rookie right-hander Paul Skenes will start the All-Star game next Tuesday. Skenes will become just the fifth rookie hurler in MLB history to have started an All-Star game, joining Hideo Nomo (1995), Fernando Valenzuela (1981), Mark Fidrych (1976) and Dave Stenhouse (1962). But Skenes' 11 starts will tie Fidrych for the fewest in a career entering an All-Star start. The former LSU star tossed seven no-hit innings while striking out 11 in a win over the division-rival Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday to lower his ERA to 1.90 with 89 strikeouts through his first 11 MLB starts. It's the fifth-most strikeouts through 11 starts in big-league history since 1901. Yeah, Skenes is pretty special.
