23 hours agoNew York Mets outfielder Brandon Nimmo (head) is sitting out on Tuesday against the division-rival Washington Nationals for the second straight day. Nimmo slipped at his hotel room on Sunday night and suffered a cut on his forehead and is now missing his second straight game to begin the series against Washington. The 31-year-old avoided a concussion, though, so he's day-to-day and could be back in there on Wednesday. The struggling Jeff McNeil will start in left field again on Tuesday and bat ninth against Nationals rookie left-hander DJ Herz. McNeil, a former batting champion, has fallen on hard times in 2024 and is danger of losing playing time if he doesn't pick things up offensively. The good news is he's hit better against lefties this year, going 20-for-79 (.253) with a homer and six RBI, but he's a DFS fade out of the nine-hole the way he's been hitting.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: New York Mets

23 hours agoThe Toronto Blue Jays recalled infield prospect Leo Jimenez from the minors on Tuesday and placed utility man Isiah Kiner Falefa (knee) on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to July 1) with a left-knee sprain. The team's No. 5 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, isn't in the starting lineup for Toronto on Tuesday versus the visiting Houston Astros. However, the 23-year-old could be mixed in occasionally moving forward with Kiner-Falefa on the injured list at both second and third base. Jimenez's stay in the big leagues could be on the short end, so fantasy managers in redraft leagues shouldn't break the bank for him on the waiver wire. The Panamanian middle infielder hit .271/.416/.431 with an .847 OPS, seven home runs, 23 RBI and 40 runs scored in 57 games for Triple-A in the minors this year to earn his first big-league promotion.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com - Keegan Matheson

23 hours agoCincinnati Reds outfielder Jake Fraley is not in the starting lineup for the Reds on Tuesday against the New York Yankees in the Bronx, even with a right-hander on the mound. Nick Martini, Stuart Fairchild and Will Benson are starting from left to right field in this one, with Martini batting sixth, Fairchild in the eight-hole and Benson hitting ninth against Yankees right-hander Luis Gil. It appears to just be a day of rest for Fraley, who hit .266/.324/.313 with no homers, three doubles, two RBI and two stolen bases in 20 games in the month of June. The 29-year-old left-handed-hitting outfielder also has 11 total stolen bases on the year, but his fantasy value in mixed leagues remains limited as a platoon player who has been injured off and on this year. Fraley has managed just one homer and nine RBI in 2024.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Cincinnati Reds

23 hours agoThe Washington Nationals are holding out second baseman Luis Garcia and outfielder Jesse Winker on Tuesday against the division-rival New York Mets with left-hander Sean Manaea on the mound in D.C. Ildemaro Vargas will start at the keystone and bat fifth, while Harold Ramirez will draw into the lineup at DH and bat third for the Nats. Also, top outfield prospect James Wood is making his second career start in left field and will hit sixth in the order. Garcia has hit just .180 (9-for-50) with none of his seven home runs this year against southpaws, but he's the teams regular second baseman against righties. Winker has had a bounce-back campaign with the Nats this year with nine home runs and 12 stolen bases in 81 games played. With Wood now in the fold in Washington, Winker should see more time as the DH.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MASN Sports - Mark Zuckerman
Share:
23 hours agoChicago White Sox outfielder Tommy Pham is not in Tuesday's starting lineup against the hosting Cleveland Guardians. Gavin Sheets will start in right field and bat cleanup, with Eloy Jimenez serving as the designated hitter and batting fifth against Guardians right-hander Carlos Carrasco. It will be Pham's first day off in the team's last 16 games, and he's served as the leadoff hitter in all of those contests. Center fielder Luis Robert Jr. will get the leadoff duties on Tuesday for the Pale Hose. The 36-year-old Pham signed with the White Sox after the start of the 2024 season and has been a valuable outfield option for the worst team in baseball, hitting .265/.344/.376 with four home runs, 16 RBI and four stolen bases. He'll be a potential trade target for contending teams at this summer's deadline, but a change of scenery will also likely mean less playing time than he's currently seeing.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com

24 hours agoThe Toronto Blue Jays placed infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa (knee) on the 10-day injured list when calling up shortstop Leo Jimenez, the club's fifth-ranked prospect according to MLB Pipeline. Kiner-Falefa has shed the perception of him being a defensive-only player by hitting .292/.338/.420 with seven homers, 33 RBI, 32 runs scored, and three stolen bases. Fantasy managers may want to consider Jimenez as a waiver wire option for those looking for middle infield help. He was slashing .271/.416/.431 with seven homers, 33 RBI, and 40 runs scored. Jimenez slashed .271/.416/.431 with seven homers and three steals with Buffalo this season. The 23-year-old will have an opportunity to establish himself for a franchise struggling to stay in the American League Wild Card chase.--Brandon Williams - RotoBallerSource: Keegan Matheson, MLB.com
Share:
24 hours agoThe return of pitcher Christian Scott to the New York Mets may lead to the club moving Jose Butto to the bullpen. Butto has been impressive in his brief time as a starter, sporting a (1-3) record with a 3.08 ERA and 1.13 WHIP in 38 innings, striking out 38 and walking 21 over seven starts. The Mets envision Butto as a multi-inning reliever so he can stay stretched out if he needs to return to the rotation. Butto has a promising arm and could provide value in fantasy leagues where holds are a category. He could return to the rotation if Scott falters in his return or if another Mets starter is injured, making Butto a stash in deep-league formats for now.--Brandon Williams - RotoBallerSource: Mike Puma, New York Post

24 hours agoMiami Marlins infielder/outfielder Vidal Brujan (undisclosed) is back in the starting lineup on Tuesday against the visiting Boston Red Sox, starting at second base and batting seventh against Red Sox right-hander Cutter Crawford. Brujan missed both Saturday and Sunday against the Phillies for undisclosed reasons but is back in there after an off day on Monday. Otto Lopez (undisclosed) was scratched for unknown reasons on Tuesday. Xavier Edwards, who was just called up from Triple-A Jacksonville, will start at the 6 and bat sixth for the Fish. Veteran and former All-Star shortstop Tim Anderson was designated for assignment on Tuesday, so Brujan and Edwards should be the primary candidates to fill the shortstop position moving forward. Brujan is expected to be the biggest beneficiary as an everyday player for Miami now.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Miami Marlins
Share:
24 hours agoBoston Red Sox middle infielder David Hamilton will start on the bench on Tuesday versus the hosting Miami Marlins. Ceddanne Rafaela is starting at shortstop and batting ninth, while Enmanuel Valdez is at second base and hitting seventh against Marlins right-hander Valente Bellozo, who will be making just the second start of his major-league career. Rafaela has more fantasy upside, but his DFS ceiling remains on the low end if he continues to hit at the bottom of Boston's batting order. Hamilton has run with his opportunity this year with both Trevor Story and Vaughn Grissom injured, but he has only two hits in his last 18 at-bats to drop his season line to .268/.318/.427 with five home runs and 15 RBI. Still, Hamilton has been a nice waiver-wire addition for fantasy managers seeking speed in 2024, as he's recorded 21 thefts in 164 at-bats.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com
Share:
24 hours agoNew York Mets rookie Christian Scott will be recalled from Triple-A Syracuse to start Wednesday against the Washington Nationals. Scott returns to the majors following a stint in the minors where the club's second-ranked prospect, according to MLB Pipeline, awaited the opportunity to return to the bigs. He had five starts with the Mets, where he was (0-2) with a 3.90 ERA and 1.08 WHIP in 27 2/3 innings, striking out 25 and walking six. Scott is a solid streaming option for fantasy managers and an excellent choice to bring up in leagues with minor league rosters. The hard-throwing Scott can be a fixture in the rotation if he continues his solid numbers despite not recording a win.--Brandon Williams - RotoBallerSource: Mike Puma, New York Post
Share:
1 day agoWashington Nationals pitcher Josiah Gray (elbow) will receive an MRI after he felt elbow discomfort during a rehab start on Sunday for Triple-A Rochester. Gray said he felt the same level of discomfort that placed him on the injured list in April. He felt more fatigued than usual in his previous start and will undergo more tests to determine the severity of his injury. The 26-year-old is (0-2) with a 14.04 ERA and 2.40 WHIP in only 8 1/3 innings, striking out nine and walking five. The rotation has managed the loss of Gray with the emergence of rookies Mitchell Parker and DJ HerzUPDATE: Manager Dave Martinez said the team will wait to get an MRI exam on Gray until around the All-Star break.--Brandon Williams - RotoBallerSource: Mark Zuckerman, MASN.com

1 day agoThe Cincinnati Reds activated catcher Tyler Stephenson (personal) from the family medical emergency list on Tuesday while designating catcher Austin Wynns for assignment. Stephenson was placed on the list on June 27 after the birth of his daughter. He is slashing .240/.317/.397 with six homers, 24 RBI, and 29 runs scored in 67 games. Wynns appeared in the June 29 win over the St. Louis Cardinals, doubling three times and scoring twice in five at-bats. Fantasy managers hope Stephenson can rebound after hitting .201/.303/.353 with a homer, six RBI, and 10 runs scored in June. He's not an elite option, but the 27-year-old is a solid fantasy backstop in leagues that require managers to start two catchers.--Brandon Williams - RotoBallerSource: Cincinnati Reds
Share:
1 day agoThe Miami Marlins are recalling infielder Xavier Edwards from Triple-A Jacksonville after designating shortstop Tim Anderson for assignment on Tuesday. With Anderson now out of the picture in Miami, there will be more playing time for both Edwards and Vidal Brujan at shortstop with the Marlins looking toward the future. Edwards showed hints of his ability at the 6 when he covered for Anderson when he was on the bereavement list earlier this year, and while he still hasn't homered in 95 MLB plate appearances since debuting in 2023, Edwards has hit .287 (25-for-87) overall with five stolen bases. The 24-year-old switch-hitter is certainly worth picking up off the waiver wire in NL-only leagues for his speed, at the very least, now that he has a path to more playing time the rest of this season.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com - Christina De Nicola
Share:
1 day agoSan Diego Padres catcher Luis Campusano (thumb) went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts as the designated hitter in his first minor-league rehab game with Single-A Lake Elsinore on Monday night. It wasn't a great first rehab game for Campusano, but all that really matters is that he's back to playing in games as he rehabs his thumb injury. The 25-year-old will probably need to catch a few games down on the farm before the Padres feel comfortable reinstating him from the 10-day injured list. The Friars also probably aren't in a rush to do so after Kyle Higashioka went on a homer binge with eight long balls in the month of June with more playing time due to Campusano's injury. Campusano started the year off strong but hit a rough patch in May before his injury, so it's possible he and Higashioka have a more even playing time split when he returns to the big-league roster.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Milb.com
