5 days agoWashington Nationals first baseman/outfielder Joey Gallo (hamstring) has started a light running program in his rehab for a serious hamstring injury that he suffered on June 11. Given the serious nature of his injury, the 30-year-old left-handed slugger won't be ready to come off the 10-day injured list when he's eligible and may not even be ready to return before the All-Star break in mid-July. Gallo is also going to require a minor-league rehab assignment before he rejoins the big-league roster. Fantasy managers chasing power will find it difficult to roster Gallo in mixed leagues now days. In his first 140 at-bats before his hamstring injury, he went just 23-for-140 (.164) with five home runs and 11 RBI for the Nats. The former first-rounder is a huge batting average drain, and the swings and misses continue to pile up.Source: MASN Sports - Bobby Blanco
5 days agoWashington Nationals pitching prospect Cade Cavalli (elbow, illness) is dealing with the flu and will be held back a few days as a result. Cavalli is in the midst of recovering from Tommy John surgery that he had in 2023 and started a rehab assignment with High-A Wilmington last Friday, throwing three scoreless innings while striking out three. The 25-year-old has come down with the flu, though, so his next rehab start will most likely be pushed back a bit. The former 22nd overall pick in 2020 out of Oklahoma allowed seven earned runs in 4 1/3 innings in his big-league debut in 2022 before being shut down with an injury. Cavalli, the team's No. 5 prospect per MLB Pipeline, should make his return to the big leagues in the second half of this season, at which point he'll be worth rostering in mixed leagues with the ability to hit triple digits as a starter.Source: MASN Sports - Bobby Blanco
5 days agoTampa Bay Rays first base prospect Jonathan Aranda (oblique) will be placed on the minor-league injured list with an oblique strain and is expected to miss four to six weeks. The 26-year-old had a brief stint with the Rays earlier this season but slashed just .213/.288/.319 with one home run over 52 plate appearances. His batting average was actually lower at Triple-A at .189, along with a .336 OBP and .295 SLG. To say this season has been a disappointment would be an understatement after a .339-25-81-82-2 line last season in the minors. Hopefully when he returns he is able to get rolling and end the season on a high note.Source: Tampa Bay Times - Marc Topkin
5 days agoWashington Nationals right-hander Josiah Gray (elbow) will make a minor-league rehab start with Triple-A Rochester on Tuesday. Gray threw 79 pitches in his last rehab start last Wednesday and is expected to go six innings or around 90 pitches this time out. And if the 26-year-old doesn't suffer any setbacks with his right elbow, it should be his final rehab start before coming off the injured list and rejoining Washington's starting rotation right before the All-Star break. Gray will have a rotation spot waiting for him in D.C. despite posting a nightmarish 14.04 ERA and 2.40 WHIP in his first two starts of the 2024 season. Given Gray's long layoff, fantasy managers shouldn't be expecting too much when he returns to the big leagues. Fantasy managers in mixed leagues shouldn't completely ignore him, though, after making his first All-Star appearance in 2023.Source: MASN Sports - Bobby Blanco
5 days agoAtlanta Braves left-handed reliever A.J. Minter (hip) had his minor-league rehab assignment transferred to Triple-A Gwinnett after one appearance with High-A Rome over the weekend. Minter is scheduled to pitch for Gwinnett on Tuesday night at Coolray Field. In his lone appearance with Rome on Saturday, Minter gave up an unearned run on one hit while striking out three batters in his inning of work. The 30-year-old veteran southpaw reliever has been on the injured list with left-hip inflammation since May 30 but could be back in Atlanta's bullpen later this week if he gets through his next appearance at Triple-A. Minter will return to being a key high-leverage setup man for the Braves in front of closer Raisel Iglesias when he comes off the injured list. So far this year, he has gone 5-3 with a save, a 2.95 ERA, a 0.98 WHIP and 23 K's in 21 1/3 innings. Minter has fantasy value in holds leagues.Source: The Athletic - David O'Brien
5 days agoAtlanta Braves shortstop Orlando Arcia was removed from Monday night's game versus the St. Louis Cardinals early as a precaution due to dizziness. Before leaving prematurely, Arcia was hitless in his two at-bats with one strikeout. He was replaced at shortstop by Zack Short. It's unclear exactly what Arcia is dealing with, but he should be considered day-to-day for now. There's a good chance that he'll be held out of the lineup for the second game of the series on Tuesday. The 29-year-old Venezuelan shortstop hasn't done much for fantasy managers this year while residing at the bottom of Atlanta's batting order regularly. He came into Monday's contest with a weak .213/.245/.346 slash line with six homers and 22 RBI in 272 at-bats. Short could jump into the starting role at the 6 if Arcia requires an injured-list stint.Source: Atlanta Braves
5 days agoBoston Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas (rib) had an MRI on his ribs on Monday, and he and the team are awaiting results. The Red Sox are hoping to get Casas back into their lineup as early as next week, and as long as the MRI results come back clean, the infielder should be able to ramp up his activity in preparation for a return before the All-Star break. Casas is on the way back from torn cartilage in his left rib cage, and it sounds like he'll be able to bypass a minor-league rehab assignment before re-entering the mix. The 24-year-old former first-round pick was slashing a potent .244/.344/.513 with six home runs, 10 RBI, and 12 runs scored across 90 plate appearances as Boston's primary first baseman before getting injured this season, and he should be a great source of slugging for fantasy managers upon his activation from the injured list.Source: Alex Speier - The Boston Globe
5 days agoTampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Drew Rasmussen (elbow) is slated for a live batting practice session on July 2, and the club is planning for him to start a minor-league rehab assignment after the mid-July All-Star break. Rasmussen is looking to take the next step in his throwing progression from last year's right flexor strain, and he's on course to be an option for the Rays sometime later this summer. He'll likely need at least four or five rehab appearances, so fantasy managers should not be expecting him to be available until the middle of August in a best-case scenario. The 28-year-old right-hander did record a 2.62 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, and 47:11 K:BB over 44 2/3 innings in Tampa Bay's rotation last season, so he's someone to consider stashing once he gets closer to his 2024 debut.Source: Steve Carney
5 days agoCleveland Guardians starting pitcher Gavin Williams (elbow) will make another minor-league rehab start on Wednesday for Triple-A Columbus. It'll be a sixth and perhaps final rehab appearance for Williams, who is on the mend from right elbow discomfort. If all goes well on Wednesday, fantasy managers shouldn't have to wait much longer for Williams' long-awaited 2024 debut with the Guardians. The 24-year-old former top prospect needs to be stashed in all fantasy leagues with his return likely to arrive early next week. Williams generated a promising .3.29 ERA and 1.26 WHIP while punching out 81 and walking 37 covering 16 starts (82 innings) in his rookie campaign during 2023.Source: Guardians Prospective on X
5 days agoTexas Rangers starting pitcher Max Scherzer (thumb) came away from Sunday's start against the visiting Kansas City Royals with a little thumb soreness, which impacts his grip strength going forward. The coaching and training staff will continue to monitor Scherzer as he prepares for a light bullpen session on Tuesday, but manager Bruce Bochy still expects him to be good to go on Friday in Baltimore for a showdown against the Orioles in his next scheduled start. The 39-year-old veteran right-hander made his season debut against the Royals on Sunday, tossing five scoreless innings and appearing to come away unscathed in Texas' win, but fantasy managers will have to monitor Scherzer's status throughout the week and consider him day-to-day before he's evaluated again on Tuesday.Source: Shawn McFarland - Dallas Morning News
5 days agoSan Francisco Giants starting pitcher Blake Snell (groin) will throw a bullpen session on Tuesday and start for the Sacramento River Cats at Triple-A on Friday, manager Bob Melvin said ahead of Monday's series opener against the visiting Chicago Cubs. After Snell struggled in Sunday's minor-league rehab appearance in his recovery from a strained left groin, the Giants have quickly decided that he needs some more work on the farm before they re-insert the hurler back into their rotation. It rules out a return before the end of June for Snell, who fantasy managers are patiently waiting on to kick-start his season. Through six starts during his first year in San Francisco, the 31-year-old reigning National League Cy Young Award winner has a dismal 9.51 ERA, 1.94 WHIP, and 31:14 K:BB over 23 2/3 innings.Source: Shayna Rubin - San Francisco Chronicle
5 days agoLos Angeles Angels second baseman Brandon Drury (illness), who is out of the lineup again for Monday's series opener against the division-rival Oakland Athletics because of an upper respiratory virus, is available off the bench. Drury went through a workout before the game, and manager Ron Washington said he is available for the game. Look for Drury to get back into Anaheim's starting nine as soon as Tuesday's meeting with Oakland. The 31-year-old journeyman slugger is slashing a miserable .173/.233/.236 with one home run, six RBI, and nine runs scored in 110 at-bats for the Angels this year and carries very little fantasy appeal at the moment.Source: Jeff Fletcher - The Orange County Register
5 days agoLos Angeles Dodgers two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani (elbow) played catch from 90 feet on Monday for the first time in his rehab process. Ohtani had Tommy John surgery last September and will not pitch at all in his first year with the Dodgers, but he's making strides with his throwing program as we approach the All-Star break next month. The 29-year-old could play some games in the outfield later this year if he continues to progress at a nice pace, but don't count on it. On the offensive side, Ohtani's right-elbow surgery hasn't slowed him down at all, as the two-time American League MVP is currently leading the National League in runs scored (61), home runs (23), batting average .321 (97-for-302), slugging percentage (.632), OPS (1.031) and total bases (191). Continue to throw Ohtani into your fantasy lineups on the daily.Source: 570 LA Sports - David Vassegh

5 days agoNew York Mets outfielder Starling Marte (knee) is dealing with a bone inflammation in his right knee and has been told to rest for 15 days. The Mets haven't officially placed Marte on the injured list, but that's likely where this is headed. The 35-year-old veteran outfielder went for an MRI exam on Monday after experiencing soreness in his right knee this weekend. With Marte set to take a few weeks off to rest his knee, fantasy managers probably won't get him back before the All-Star break in mid-July. It's a tough break for fantasy managers and the Mets, as Marte has been productive this year, slashing .278/.328/.416 with seven home runs, 30 RBI, 12 stolen bases and 38 runs scored in his 245 at-bats. Keep him stashed in all fantasy formats. DJ Stewart and Tyrone Taylor will battle for extra playing time in the Mets' outfield with Marte likely heading to the IL.Source: New York Post - Mike Puma
