1 week agoMinnesota Twins starting pitcher Pablo Lopez continued his stellar second half in Tuesday's 10-5 win over the Angels. Lopez pitched seven innings, allowing four runs (zero earned) on eight hits (including a three-run home run) and a walk with 10 strikeouts. The 28-year-old has turned in a tale of two halves, with a 5.11 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in 19 first-half starts but a 1.93 ERA and 1.06 WHIP in 10 second-half starts. His success has been fueled by six consecutive quality starts. Lopez will have a decent chance to extend that streak in his next start, which will be a middling matchup at the Guardians.--Connelly Doan - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com

1 week agoPhiladelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner continued to heat up at the plate in Tuesday's 9-4 win over the Rays. Turner went 3-for-5 with a single, a pair of two-run home runs, and a strikeout. The 31-year-old launched a third-inning Taj Bradley fastball into the left-field seats and hit an eighth-inning Edwin Uceta offering into nearly the same spot in the seats. Turner's second-half stats are down compared to his first-half, but he has picked things up in September, slashing .297/.366/.595 with three HR in 37 at-bats. A Turner hot streak hitting at the top of a surging Phillies lineup is exactly what fantasy managers need as the season finishes up.--Connelly Doan - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com

1 week agoDetroit Tigers starting pitcher Keider Montero was on his game in Tuesday's 11-0 win over the Rockies. Montero took advantage of a favorable matchup inside his home park, tossing a complete-game shutout with three hits, no walks, and five strikeouts. The 24-year-old's season numbers leave something to be desired but he has pitched better in the second half. Specifically, he has gone 4-2 with a 3.69 ERA in eight starts from August onward. He will face a much tougher matchup in his next start against the Orioles. While he has pitched better, fantasy managers may not want to risk starting him in such a tough matchup so deep into the season.--Connelly Doan - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com

1 week agoDetroit Tigers right-hander Reese Olson (shoulder) tossed three scoreless innings (45 total pitches in his second minor-league rehab start on Tuesday with Triple-A Toledo, and he will now rejoin the Tigers to be evaluated. "We'll determine what's next for him. It could beread more...

1 week agoLos Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said that right-hander Tyler Glasnow's (elbow) bullpen session went well on Tuesday and now expects him to throw two to three simulated innings in Atlanta this weekend. After several successful bullpen sessions, Glasnow is taking the next step to face live hitters, and if all goes well this weekend, the 31-year-old could be cleared to return to LA's starting rotation without going on a minor-league rehab start. It's progress for Glasnow, but fantasy managers still playing for something through the rest of the regular season may want to temper expectations for the dominant right-hander, as the Dodgers could limit his workload to make absolutely sure that he's in tip-top shape for the start of the postseason in October. Maintaining his health the rest of the year is of utmost importance for a Dodgers rotation that has its fair share of injury issues in 2024.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com - Juan Toribio

1 week agoTexas Rangers right-hander Max Scherzer (shoulder) is set to return from the injured list and make a start against the Seattle Mariners on Saturday, according to manager Bruce Bochy. In addition to Scherzer, right-handed veteran Jacob deGrom (elbow) will make his season debut on Friday after recovering from Tommy John surgery. Scherzer's last start for Texas came on July 30 and he's been out ever since due to right-shoulder fatigue. But the 40-year-old future Hall of Famer threw four shutout innings with eight strikeouts in a minor-league rehab game for Triple-A Round Rock last Saturday and has been chomping at the bit to get back to the majors to try and finish off the year strong. It's been in injury-riddled 2024 campaign for Scherzer, who has made only eight starts, but he'll be a tempting fantasy streamer in his first start back against a weak Seattle offense.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Dallas Morning News - Shawn McFarland

1 week agoBoston Red Sox right-hander Tanner Houck (arm) is currently in line to start on Friday against the division-rival New York Yankees. When asked exactly why Houck hasn't really rebounded from his last start, manager Alex Cora said it's basically a case of dead-arm. It' good news, as Boston is going to need Houck healthy down the stretch if they are going to make a push for the final wild-card spot in the American League. The 28-year-old has not looked as good in the second half of the season for the BoSox, going 0-4 with a 4.78 ERA, 38 strikeouts and 21 walks in 52 2/3 innings over nine starts. The Red Sox and fantasy managers will be hoping he can bounce back after some extra time off this weekend, but it's a tough matchup that will make him a dice roll in fantasy lineups. On the year, Houck still has a decent 3.24 ERA, but his strikeout rate is also a career-low 21.1%.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: The Boston Globe - Gabrielle Starr

1 week agoThe Oakland Athletics placed right-hander Osvaldo Bido (wrist) on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to Sept. 8) on Tuesday with right-wrist flexor tendinitis and recalled left-hander Brady Basso and first baseman/outfielder Ryan Noda from Triple-A Las Vegas in corresponding moves. Infielder Tristan Gray was also optioned to Vegas. With Bido going to the shelf, left-hander JP Sears took his turn in the starting rotation to face the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park on Tuesday. With just several weeks left in the season, it remains to be seen if the 28-year-old Bido will be able to make any more starts for the A's in 2024. He's been a nice find for fantasy managers in deeper leagues and has pitched well in his first year in Oakland, going 5-3 with a 3.41 ERA and 1.09 WHIP with 63 strikeouts and 26 walks in his 16 outings (nine starts) covering 63 1/3 innings.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Oakland A's Communications

1 week agoCleveland Guardians right-hander Ben Lively (thigh) exited his start early on Tuesday against the Chicago White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field due to a right-thigh bruise. Lively hit the deck after taking a comebacker off the bat of outfielder Dominic Fletcher to his thigh. He was helped off the field and removed from the contest. Fantasy managers that were streaming Lively in an excellent matchup have to be disappointed about his early exit. Before being helped off the diamond, he tossed two scoreless frames while allowing a hit, walking none and striking out two. At the very least, the 32-year-old will be questionable to make his next start, and he could also land on the 15-day injured list, which would put him at risk of missing the rest of the regular season as the Guardians try to clinch the American League Central.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Chicago Sun-Times - Daryl Van Schouwen

1 week agoTexas Rangers starting pitcher Jacob deGrom (elbow) will make his 2024 season debut on Friday and the two-time Cy Young winner will draw a very favorable matchup against the Mariners, although it comes on the road in Seattle. The Mariners have the lowest team batting average in all of baseball and they also have the highest strikeout rate per game (10.15). deGrom is making his way back from Tommy John surgery and hasn't pitched in the majors since April of 2023, but he made four rehab appearances in which he was his usual dominant self. The four-time All-Star threw a total of 10 2/3 inning, allowing one earned run on four hits and one walk while striking out 15. Four innings was the most he threw in any one of his rehab starts, so he may be somewhat limited in his return, but he'll offer fantasy managers a chance for good strikeout numbers, low ERA, and low WHIP during the fantasy playoffs, so he should be rostered wherever he's still available.--Jarod Rupp - RotoBallerSource: Shawn McFarland - Dallas News

1 week agoThe Atlanta Braves were forced to pull right-hander Reynaldo Lopez (shoulder) from his start early on Tuesday night against the division-rival Washington Nationals at Nationals Park due to right-shoulder tightness. Lopez only made it through one inning and gave up one hit in a scoreless frame while walking none and striking out one before giving way to veteran reliever Jesse Chavez. The Braves were quick to give the 30-year-old the hook when they noticed his velocity was down right from the beginning. Lopez has been great in a move to a full-time starting role in his first year in Atlanta in 2024, but he's gone over 100 innings in the big leagues for the first time since 2019, and it appears his elevated workload could finally be catching up to him. At this point, depending on the severity of his shoulder injury, it wouldn't be a surprise to see the Braves play it safe and move him to the bullpen as they battle for a playoff spot.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Atlanta Braves

1 week agoPhiladelphia Phillies outfielder/designated hitter Kyle Schwarber (elbow) left Tuesday's contest early against the Tampa Bay Rays at Citizens Bank Park with left-elbow discomfort, according to the Phillies. Schwarber appeared to injure his elbow when sliding back into first base on a pickoff attempt by the Rays catcher. He did damage at the plate before departing, though, going 1-for-1 with his 35th homer of the season (a solo shot) while also scoring a run and walking once. He was replaced at DH by bench player Buddy Kennedy. Expect the 31-year-old slugger to undergo testing after the game, so we won't know his status moving forward until then. Hopefully, it's just a day-to-day thing and not a serious injury. If it is serious, it could jeopardize Schwarber's available for the rest of the regular season and the playoffs. Both Kody Clemens and Weston Wilson could see more at-bats if Schwarber misses time.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: The Athletic - Matt Gelb

1 week agoThe Seattle Mariners moved right-handed reliever Yimi Garcia (elbow) to the 60-day injured list on Tuesday due to right-elbow inflammation, which will put him out for the rest of the 2024 season. In other moves, the M's also placed right-handed starter Luis Castillo (hamstring) on the 15-day IL (retroactive to Sept. 9) with a left-hamstring strain and selected the contract of catcher Seby Zavala from Triple-A Tacoma. The 34-year-old Garcia recently had a setback with his elbow injury and won't pitch again for the team this year. The Dominican hurler began the year pitching for the Toronto Blue Jays, where he had all five of his saves in 2024, before being traded to Seattle at the deadline in late July. Garcia only pitched in nine innings out of the bullpen after the trade and allowed six earned runs while walking four and striking out seven.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Mariners PR

1 week agoSeattle Mariners outfielder Victor Robles (elbow) is starting in right field and is batting leadoff for the M's at T-Mobile Park on Tuesday night against the visiting San Diego Padres and right-hander Yu Darvish for the start of a new series. Robles was hit by a pitch on his elbow last Friday against the St. Louis Cardinals and then missed the final two games of the series. After a scheduled day off on Monday, the 27-year-old is back in action and will be looking for his first career hit against Darvish, who he has faced five times before. The Dominican outfielder has been an offensive spark for Seattle since being acquired in a deadline trade from the Washington Nationals at the end of July. In his 61 games with Seattle, Robles has hit .307/.369/.449 with an .818 OPS, four homers, 13 doubles, 19 RBI and 19 steals in 199 plate appearances.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Seattle Mariners
