5 days agoOakland Athletics right-hander Osvaldo Bido (wrist) had been pitching through a wrist issue for his last few outings, but manager Mark Kotsay said it reached the point that Bido had trouble gripping the baseball following his most recent outing on Sept. 7. The A's are hopeful that Bido could return before the end of the regular season since his injured-list placement was retroactive to Sept. 8. However, as of Monday, Bido still had not begun playing catch. The 28-year-old is dealing with right-wrist flexor tendinitis, and at this point, it's unlikely that he'll be able to return to Oakland's starting rotation in what has been a solid year for him. The Dominican hurler has gone 5-3 with a 3.41 ERA and 1.09 WHIP with 63 strikeouts and 26 walks in 63 1/3 frames over 16 outings (nine starts) in his first year in Oakland and just his second in the big leagues.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com

5 days agoOakland Athletics right-hander Ross Stripling (back) felt his back "lock up" during the team's win over the division-rival Houston Astros on Sept. 10. Stripling has resumed throwing and is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Wednesday and another one when the team returns home from its nine-game road trip. He is hopeful to return during the final week of the regular season. Stripling's injured-list stint was retroactive to Sept. 9, and the A's are hopeful that he can return when first eligible on Sept. 24. The 34-year-old veteran is attempting to return from a lower-back strain, but no fantasy managers should be waiting around for him. Stripling has been pretty bad in his first year with the A's in 2024, going 2-11 with a career-worst 6.08 ERA, a 1.54 WHIP and a career-low 13% walk rate in 84 1/3 innings over his 21 appearances (14 starts).--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com

5 days agoOakland Athletics right-handed reliever Austin Adams (forearm) was scheduled to start a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Las Vegas during the week of Sept. 9, but he was pulled back after experiencing a setback with his right-forearm tendinitis. Adams returned to Oakland on Sept. 12 to be re-evaluated by team doctors but still hadn't been seen as of Monday. At this point, it's unclear if Adams will pitch again for the A's in 2024. With the season winding down and the A's not in playoff contention, it would be a surprise if we saw the 33-year-old veteran back with Oakland before the end of September. If this is it for Adams in 2024, the former eighth-rounder will finish his first year in the Bay Area with a 1-2 record, 3.92 ERA (4.48 FIP), a 1.48 WHIP and a 53:23 K:BB in 41 1/3 innings out of the bullpen for the A's.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com

5 days agoNew York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that infielder Oswaldo Cabrera will start at shortstop on Tuesday night against the Seattle Mariners and right-hander Bryan Woo at T-Mobile Park, with shortstop Anthony Volpe getting the day off. Volpe could certainly use a mental break, as he's gone 8-for-49 (.163) with four RBI, one walk and 17 strikeouts in 14 games so far in the month of September. Since Sept. 8, he has just two hits in 27 plate appearances with nine strikeouts to drop his season line to .246/.294/.369 in 649 plate appearances. Cabrera will likely hit near the bottom of the Yankees' batting order, making him an unattractive DFS sleeper play on Tuesday in a tough matchup. The 25-year-old has hit .249 (70-for-281) on the year with eight homers and 35 RBI. Cabrera doesn't have a hit in either of his two career at-bats against Woo.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Talkin' Yanks

5 days agoCincinnati Reds outfielder Nick Martini (thumb) started a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville on Saturday and hit two home runs on Sunday for the Bats. Martini is recovering from a left-thumb sprain that has kept him out since July 6. As long as he doesn't suffer a setback while playing in rehab games in the minors, Martini figures to be able to rejoin the Reds' big-league roster before the end of September. The 34-year-old former seventh-round pick by the St. Louis Cardinals in 2011 out of Kansas State has mostly been a bench outfielder for Cincinnati in 2024, hitting .212/.272/.370 with five home runs, 24 RBI and 23 runs scored in 146 at-bats. The left-handed-hitting outfielder has a .252 career average in his five major-league seasons with only 13 home runs and 70 RBI in 193 games played with the Reds, A's, Padres and Cubs.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: The Athletic - C. 5 days agoCincinnati Reds right-hander Ian Gibaut (calf, forearm) started a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville on Sunday and gave up a home run in his lone inning of work. It's good to see Gibaut pitching in games again, but because of the fact that he's missed the entire 2024 season, it's unlikely that we'll see him down the stretch pitching out of the Reds' bullpen with the season winding down. The 30-year-old reliever has been rehabbing a right-calf strain and a right-forearm strain all season long. The former 11th-round selection of the Tampa Bay Rays in 2015 out of Tulane was solid for the Reds last year, going 8-4 with a 3.33 ERA (4.07 FIP), a 1.28 WHIP, a career-high three saves, a career-high 69 strikeouts and 28 walks in 75 2/3 innings out of the bullpen.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: The Athletic - C. 5 days agoSan Diego Padres first baseman/designated hitter Luis Arraez (knee) jammed his right knee sliding into home plate in Monday night's win over the visiting Houston Astros, but he said it is just inflammation. Arraez thinks he'll be ready to go on Tuesday, but he needs to wait and see. The 27-year-old hit machine stayed in the game after sliding into home plate but was replaced by a pinch-runner in the seventh inning after he doubled and hobbled into second base. Before leaving, he had two hits in four at-bats to extend his hitting streak to 14 games. Arraez also snapped a string of 141 straight plate appearances without a strikeout on Monday when he fanned early in the game. The Venezuelan has very little power (four homers) or speed (nine steals), but he's an elite contact hitter who is now batting .323 (194-for-601) on the year. Consider Arraez to be day-to-day for now.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com - AJ Cassavell

5 days agoThe Houston Astros will place outfielder Ben Gamel (knee) on the 10-day injured list due to a left-knee contusion. Gamel injured his left knee on Saturday and didn't play on either Sunday or Monday, and now he'll be out for even more time. In his short time with Houston this year, Gamel has been a bench bat against right-handed pitching and was helping to fill in before outfielder Kyle Tucker returned from a lengthy stint on the IL due to a fractured shin. In his 20 games with the Astros, Gamel has gone 15-for-58 (.259) with a homer, three doubles and four RBI in 69 plate appearances. The 32-year-old will be hoping to return just before the end of the 2024 regular season. In his absence, fellow left-handed-hitting outfielder Jason Heyward will see a bit more playing time against right-handed pitching, mainly in left field.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com - Brian McTaggart

5 days agoCleveland Guardians first baseman/designated hitter Kyle Manzardo continued to produce offensively in Monday's 4-3 win over the Twins. Manzardo went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run and a walk. The 24-year-old rookie ambushed an eighth-inning Griffin Jax fastball, launching it into the right-field seats to put the Guardians ahead for good. Manzardo has looked solid since re-joining the team in September, slashing .278/.333/.583 with three HR in 36 at-bats. His playing time still hasn't been quite consistent enough, but he has provided plenty of fantasy value lately when he has been in the lineup.--Connelly Doan - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com

5 days agoColorado Rockies shortstop Ezequiel Tovar played his part offensively in Monday's 3-2 win over the Diamondbacks. Tovar went 1-for-4 with a solo home run and two strikeouts. The 23-year-old took a fourth-inning Merrill Kelly offering to the opposite field, landing it in the right-center bullpen for his 24th HR of the season. Tovar's season numbers look good overall, but he has struggled in the second half of the season. He is now slashing .244/.270/.465 in 213 second-half at-bats with 10 HR, 26 RBI, and two stolen bases. This batting average is bolstered by a solid July, as he hit just .200 in August and is hitting .182 in September.--Connelly Doan - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com

5 days agoPittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Paul Skenes pitched well but took the loss in Monday's 4-0 game against the Cardinals. Skenes pitched six innings, allowing one run on four hits and a walk with seven strikeouts. Unfortunately, the Pirates could not provide any offensive support and were shut down by Andre Pallante. Regardless of the loss, the 22-year-old rookie has been outstanding this season. He is now 10-3 with a 2.07 ERA, a 0.98 WHIP, and an 11.29 K/9 rate in 21 starts and 126 IP. His next matchup will be on the road at the Reds. While the ballpark is not favorable, Skenes has proven to be a top fantasy pitcher in any matchup.--Connelly Doan - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com

5 days agoKansas City Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. had another huge offensive game in Monday's 7-6 loss to the Tigers. Witt Jr. went 2-for-4 with a single, a grand slam, five RBI, and a stolen base. The 24-year-old jumped on a third-inning Reese Olson hanging curveball, sending it into the left-field seats for his 32nd long ball of the season. Witt Jr. has provided everything from a fantasy perspective this season, slashing .332/.384/.600 with 122 runs scored, 108 RBI, and 29 stolen bases in 666 plate appearances. His power, speed, and batting average were never in question, but Witt Jr.'s additional counting stats have benefited all season long from the Royals' overall offensive performance.--Connelly Doan - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com

5 days agoSan Diego Padres first baseman/designated hitter Luis Arraez (undisclosed) looked to be shaken up after being thrown out at the plate while trying to score on Jurickson Profar's single on Monday night at Petco Park against the Houston Astros and appeared to be favoring his right leg. Arraez batted for himself in the seventh inning, doubled and hobbled to second base. With something clearly still bothering him, Tyler Wade was sent in to pinch run for Arraez. The 27-year-old appeared to be dealing with some sort of lower-body injury, possibly his knee, but he should be considered day-to-day for now until we know more specifics about his ailment. Before leaving, he went 2-for-4 with a strikeout to extend his hitting streak to 14 games while also striking out in the third inning to snap a stretch of 141 plate appearances without a strikeout. The Venezuelan remains an elite contact and average guy (.322) for the Friars.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com - AJ Cassavell
