5 days agoThe Toronto Blue Jays reinstated shortstop Bo Bichette (calf) from the 10-day injured list on Tuesday and also placed outfielder Daulton Varsho (shoulder) on the 10-day IL with a right-shoulder strain. The club also placed infielder Will Wagner (knee) on the 60-day IL, recalled outfielder Steward Berroa from Triple-A Buffalo and claimed right-hander Nick Robertson off waivers from the Angels and optioned him to Buffalo. Bichette is starting at short and batting second on Tuesday against Texas Rangers right-hander Nathan Eovaldi. Bichette has been out since just after the All-Star break with a calf injury that has bothered him for most of the year. It could also help explain why he's having the worst year of his career with a .222/.275/.320 slash line with a .595 OPS in 80 games. The two-time All-Star is now just hoping to finish off the year on a strong note.Source: Toronto Blue Jays
5 days agoPittsburgh Pirates shortstop/outfielder Oneil Cruz (ankle) remains out of the team's starting lineup on Tuesday at Busch Stadium against the division-rival St. Louis Cardinals. Michael Taylor will man center field for the Bucs and will hit ninth against Cardinals right-handed veteran Lance Lynn. Cruz left Sunday's contest against the Kansas City Royals early with soreness in his left ankle and has missed the last two games as a result. For now, fantasy managers can continue to consider the 25-year-old day-to-day. The Pirates recently made the move to put Cruz in center field full time, which has allowed Nick Gonzalez to shift over to shortstop and the Bucs to recall infield prospect Nick Yorke. Taylor won't be very attractive as a DFS sleeper in the nine-hole, but he is hitting .294 in his career with an .804 OPS, a home run and an RBI in 17 career at-bats against Lynn.Source: MLB.com
5 days agoNew York Mets outfielder Starling Marte (forearm) is back in right field and hitting in the two-hole on Tuesday against the division-rival Washington Nationals and left-hander Mitchell Parker at Citi Field. Marte was hit by a pitch on his forearm on Saturday and missed two games as a result, but he's back in action on Tuesday for the second game of the series against the Nats. The 35-year-old veteran came off the bench as a pinch-hitter in Monday's contest and went 1-for-2 with a walk-off RBI single in extra innings. Fantasy managers will want to get Marte back in their starting lineups, especially against a young left-handed hurler. He's hitting .272 (83-for-305) on the year and has gone 28-for-88 (.318) with two of his seven long balls on the year against southpaws.Source: MLB.com - Anthony DiComo
5 days agoAs expected, New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor (back) remains out of the starting lineup for Tuesday's contest at Citi Field against the division-rival Washington Nationals. With Lindor sitting out again, rookie Luisangel Acuna is getting the start at shortstop and will bat ninth against Nationals left-hander Mitchell Parker. Lindor said on Monday that he could miss from two to five games as he deals with a back issue that has kept him out recently. Acuna, the younger brother of Braves superstar Ronald Acuna Jr., will be playing in just his third major-league game on Tuesday after recently being called up by the Mets. In his first three games, he's gone 2-for-7 with a strikeout. The Mets can't afford to be without the 30-year-old Lindor for too long as they try to secure a wild-card spot in the National League, as he's having an MVP-caliber season in 2024.Source: MLB.com - Anthony DiComo
5 days agoMiami Marlins right-hander Sandy Alcantara (elbow) faced live hitters in a live batting practice session at LoanDepot Park on Tuesday, and according to a source, he was pumping 99 mph on his fastball. It's a notable development, as it represents the first time that Alcantara has faced live hitters since undergoing Tommy John surgery early last October. The 29-year-old continues to progress from elbow reconstruction and will spend all offseason getting up to speed that he can be ready to rock for the start of the 2025 campaign next spring. The Dominican hurler won the National League Cy Young award in 2022 before regressing to a 4.14 ERA and 1.21 WHIP in 28 starts last year before having TJ surgery in October. As long as Alcantara doesn't have any setbacks in the offseason or in spring training next year, he'll likely be a sought-after fantasy selection as a high-end bounce-back candidate in fantasy.Source: Fish On First - Isaac Azout
5 days agoOakland Athletics right-hander Osvaldo Bido (wrist) had been pitching through a wrist issue for his last few outings, but manager Mark Kotsay said it reached the point that Bido had trouble gripping the baseball following his most recent outing on Sept. 7. The A's are hopeful that Bido could return before the end of the regular season since his injured-list placement was retroactive to Sept. 8. However, as of Monday, Bido still had not begun playing catch. The 28-year-old is dealing with right-wrist flexor tendinitis, and at this point, it's unlikely that he'll be able to return to Oakland's starting rotation in what has been a solid year for him. The Dominican hurler has gone 5-3 with a 3.41 ERA and 1.09 WHIP with 63 strikeouts and 26 walks in 63 1/3 frames over 16 outings (nine starts) in his first year in Oakland and just his second in the big leagues.Source: MLB.com
5 days agoOakland Athletics right-hander Ross Stripling (back) felt his back "lock up" during the team's win over the division-rival Houston Astros on Sept. 10. Stripling has resumed throwing and is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Wednesday and another one when the team returns home from its nine-game road trip. He is hopeful to return during the final week of the regular season. Stripling's injured-list stint was retroactive to Sept. 9, and the A's are hopeful that he can return when first eligible on Sept. 24. The 34-year-old veteran is attempting to return from a lower-back strain, but no fantasy managers should be waiting around for him. Stripling has been pretty bad in his first year with the A's in 2024, going 2-11 with a career-worst 6.08 ERA, a 1.54 WHIP and a career-low 13% walk rate in 84 1/3 innings over his 21 appearances (14 starts).Source: MLB.com
5 days agoOakland Athletics right-handed reliever Austin Adams (forearm) was scheduled to start a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Las Vegas during the week of Sept. 9, but he was pulled back after experiencing a setback with his right-forearm tendinitis. Adams returned to Oakland on Sept. 12 to be re-evaluated by team doctors but still hadn't been seen as of Monday. At this point, it's unclear if Adams will pitch again for the A's in 2024. With the season winding down and the A's not in playoff contention, it would be a surprise if we saw the 33-year-old veteran back with Oakland before the end of September. If this is it for Adams in 2024, the former eighth-rounder will finish his first year in the Bay Area with a 1-2 record, 3.92 ERA (4.48 FIP), a 1.48 WHIP and a 53:23 K:BB in 41 1/3 innings out of the bullpen for the A's.Source: MLB.com
5 days agoNew York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that infielder Oswaldo Cabrera will start at shortstop on Tuesday night against the Seattle Mariners and right-hander Bryan Woo at T-Mobile Park, with shortstop Anthony Volpe getting the day off. Volpe could certainly use a mental break, as he's gone 8-for-49 (.163) with four RBI, one walk and 17 strikeouts in 14 games so far in the month of September. Since Sept. 8, he has just two hits in 27 plate appearances with nine strikeouts to drop his season line to .246/.294/.369 in 649 plate appearances. Cabrera will likely hit near the bottom of the Yankees' batting order, making him an unattractive DFS sleeper play on Tuesday in a tough matchup. The 25-year-old has hit .249 (70-for-281) on the year with eight homers and 35 RBI. Cabrera doesn't have a hit in either of his two career at-bats against Woo.Source: Talkin' Yanks
5 days agoCincinnati Reds outfielder Nick Martini (thumb) started a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville on Saturday and hit two home runs on Sunday for the Bats. Martini is recovering from a left-thumb sprain that has kept him out since July 6. As long as he doesn't suffer a setback while playing in rehab games in the minors, Martini figures to be able to rejoin the Reds' big-league roster before the end of September. The 34-year-old former seventh-round pick by the St. Louis Cardinals in 2011 out of Kansas State has mostly been a bench outfielder for Cincinnati in 2024, hitting .212/.272/.370 with five home runs, 24 RBI and 23 runs scored in 146 at-bats. The left-handed-hitting outfielder has a .252 career average in his five major-league seasons with only 13 home runs and 70 RBI in 193 games played with the Reds, A's, Padres and Cubs.Source: The Athletic - C. 5 days agoCincinnati Reds right-hander Ian Gibaut (calf, forearm) started a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville on Sunday and gave up a home run in his lone inning of work. It's good to see Gibaut pitching in games again, but because of the fact that he's missed the entire 2024 season, it's unlikely that we'll see him down the stretch pitching out of the Reds' bullpen with the season winding down. The 30-year-old reliever has been rehabbing a right-calf strain and a right-forearm strain all season long. The former 11th-round selection of the Tampa Bay Rays in 2015 out of Tulane was solid for the Reds last year, going 8-4 with a 3.33 ERA (4.07 FIP), a 1.28 WHIP, a career-high three saves, a career-high 69 strikeouts and 28 walks in 75 2/3 innings out of the bullpen.Source: The Athletic - C. 5 days agoSan Diego Padres first baseman/designated hitter Luis Arraez (knee) jammed his right knee sliding into home plate in Monday night's win over the visiting Houston Astros, but he said it is just inflammation. Arraez thinks he'll be ready to go on Tuesday, but he needs to wait and see. The 27-year-old hit machine stayed in the game after sliding into home plate but was replaced by a pinch-runner in the seventh inning after he doubled and hobbled into second base. Before leaving, he had two hits in four at-bats to extend his hitting streak to 14 games. Arraez also snapped a string of 141 straight plate appearances without a strikeout on Monday when he fanned early in the game. The Venezuelan has very little power (four homers) or speed (nine steals), but he's an elite contact hitter who is now batting .323 (194-for-601) on the year. Consider Arraez to be day-to-day for now.Source: MLB.com - AJ Cassavell
5 days agoThe Houston Astros will place outfielder Ben Gamel (knee) on the 10-day injured list due to a left-knee contusion. Gamel injured his left knee on Saturday and didn't play on either Sunday or Monday, and now he'll be out for even more time. In his short time with Houston this year, Gamel has been a bench bat against right-handed pitching and was helping to fill in before outfielder Kyle Tucker returned from a lengthy stint on the IL due to a fractured shin. In his 20 games with the Astros, Gamel has gone 15-for-58 (.259) with a homer, three doubles and four RBI in 69 plate appearances. The 32-year-old will be hoping to return just before the end of the 2024 regular season. In his absence, fellow left-handed-hitting outfielder Jason Heyward will see a bit more playing time against right-handed pitching, mainly in left field.Source: MLB.com - Brian McTaggart
5 days agoCleveland Guardians first baseman/designated hitter Kyle Manzardo continued to produce offensively in Monday's 4-3 win over the Twins. Manzardo went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run and a walk. The 24-year-old rookie ambushed an eighth-inning Griffin Jax fastball, launching it into the right-field seats to put the Guardians ahead for good. Manzardo has looked solid since re-joining the team in September, slashing .278/.333/.583 with three HR in 36 at-bats. His playing time still hasn't been quite consistent enough, but he has provided plenty of fantasy value lately when he has been in the lineup.Source: MLB.com
