NFL Agrees To Expand Playoff Format
5 years agoNFL owners voted in favor of the playoffs being expanded after the 2020 season, according to a source. The move was expected and became official on Tuesday. One extra team per conference will get into the playoffs moving forward, putting the total playoff teams at 14, up from 12 previously. The new format makes regular season games even that much more important, as only the top seed in each conference will receive a bye in the first round of the postseason. Had this format been adopted in 1990, just 1.6 percent of teams would have gotten into the playoffs with a losing record. The NFL is also planning as though they will get through a full regular season and postseason this year despite the coronavirus pandemic sweeping the nation.
