Mike Shildt Refuses To Name A Set Closer
10 months agoWhile it's expected that San Diego Padres right-hander Robert Suarez will open the 2024 season as the team's closer with Josh Hader now in Houston, manager Mike Shildt refused to name a set closer when asked who his closer was with spring training right around the corner. In addition to Suarez, the new skipper mentioned Yuki Matsui and Wandy Peralta, who were both added in free agency. "I'm not going to give you an absolute answer because depending on the day, depending on the matchups, it could be anybody based on who is available," Shildt said. It's going to be a situation worth watching this spring. Suarez, 32, is still the favorite, but he missed the first half of 2023 due to an elbow injury and had a 4.23 ERA and 0.90 WHIP with 24 strikeouts in only 27 2/3 innings pitched.
