Matt Chapman Undergoes Thumb Surgery
6 years agoOakland Athletics third baseman Matt Chapman (thumb) underwent successful left thumb surgery on Tuesday, and it was performed by Dr. Steven Shin. Chapman had an ulnar sided sesamoid bone excision along the left thumb. Shin was happy with the outcome and expects Chapman to make a full recovery prior to the start of spring training. While this could affect him early in the year, Chapman has proven to be a budding star, hitting .278 (152-for-547) with 100 runs scored, 42 doubles, 24 home runs and 68 RBI in his breakout 2018 season. He also led all of baseball in doubles (25) after the All-Star break, and his 52 runs scored and 42 extra-base hits led the American League in the second half. He's also one of the best defensive third basemen in the league.
