Marlins Nearing Extension With Sandy Alcantara
3 years agoThe Miami Marlins are working on a contract extension for starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara and appear to be making progress. Craig Mish is reporting that a deal is getting closer and could be worth north of $55 million for five years. Alcantara is arbitration-eligible for the first time this offseason and can't become a free agent until after the 2024 season. The right-hander has a 3.48 ERA and 1.21 WHIP in 78 starts in parts of four seasons for the Fish, and he became the first Marlin to record 200 strikeouts and 200 innings in a season in 2021 since A.J. Burnett did it in 2002. If Miami locks down Alcantara, it would be the second extension they've completed this offseason after they signed shortstop Miguel Rojas to a deal that will keep him in town through the 2023 campaign.
